You huff as you sit in the too-small rocking chair on your front porch. The morning sun shines down on you, making you even more irritated as you fan your hand over your face. You close your eyes and focus on the red of your eyelids when you hear someone coming up the steps, and judging by the feminine sigh that leaves their mouth, it's your beloved wife.
"Everyone's ballots are bein' counted up. I heard some mumblings, sayin' he's most likely gonna be executed, which is what he deserves." You hum in response, keeping your eyes shut as you listen to the birds chirping and your wife's breathing.
"You wanna know his name? I found it out earlier. Turns out, he's only been at Hilltop for around a week or so; he came in with that new batch of survivors."
Her words manage to pique your interest. "Really? Hm. That explains why he wasn't familiar. What's gonna happen with the other newbies he came with? Also, no, I don't care for that bastard's name."
"I'm gonna question them, see if they knew about his... tendencies and if we need to keep an eye on any of the others." You can hear some hesitation in her voice, which makes you frown. "What's else?", you ask, clenching your jaw in preparation for what's to come.
Maggie clears her throat before speaking, "Well... some people are questionin' if... if you're stable? I guess? It's stupid, but I can't just tell 'em to shut their mouths." You slowly exhale while carefully popping your bandaged knuckles. "Okay. That only means I'll need to reestablish some rapport. Nothing I haven't done before." You try to hide it, but your disappointment seeps into your tone regardless.
"I'm sorry, honey. I'll do whatever I can to help you", Maggie reassures, staring at your face and wishing she could gaze into your beautiful irises. "Can you look at me? Please?"
As if your day couldn't get any better, the first thing you notice when you glance at Maggie is her bruised eye.
Your own eyes snap shut at the sight, something the brunette notices. She moves to your side with a worried brow and a frown. When you reopen your eyes and see she's not where she previously was, you allow the tenseness to bleed from your posture, only to tense right back up when she wraps her arms around your shoulders from behind.
She slots her chin at the junction between your neck and shoulder, humming softly in an attempt to ease your nerves. "It's just me, pumpkin. Just us. You're fine. I'm fine. No need to fret." When her words and her presence don't cease your worries, she sighs. As she begins pulling away, you quickly reach your hands up to hold her arms in place. You can feel her smile against your neck before placing a kiss on your bruised skin.
