"Why can't I have just one of them?" I asked, my shoulders sulking as I pulled out my burger from the paper bag in which it was stored.
Four and I had picked up our food and drove to his beach house. Our ride wasn't awkward as he let the radio play while my mind rushed with many different thoughts on what was currently happening and what I was doing with him. I hadn't a clue, if I am being completely honest. There was something about him that, no matter what, drew me in. In the worst way. Being around someone who was blunt about their doings and intentions from the start bothered me, yet at the same time, it allowed me to create a better understanding of what the situation really was. But with that also came the mystery of who Four really was. That enigma seemed far more complicated than the person I had created him to be in my head.
I was trying to allow his true self—which in plain sight appeared esoteric to me—to be revealed rather than paint a picture of him on a corroded canvas.
I believe, or more rather, I convinced myself of that being the reason I'd decided to go with him tonight when he called out to me. My judgement was clouded and my opinions of him were biased and opposed. We needed a fresh start, one I was fearful of deeply as I knew getting to really know the true him meant he'd potentially get to know the true me.
But taking my little sister's advice, I would try to expand myself a bit and explore the unknown.
We'd pass through his house where he retrieved two blankets, a pack of beer from the fridge and a few water bottles. I held the bags of food in my hands and followed him. I had been drinking and my motor skills were getting a bit sloppy but I did my best to stand my ground against it. Four kicked his shoes off in the house and suggested I do the same so they wouldn't become sand buckets. I did so and now here we were, sitting on the beach, enjoying the peace and me trying to convince him to let me have one of his large fries.
He shook his head while he chucked the cap off of a beer. "I told you not to eat your fries in my car."
I frowned. He did, but I didn't listen and to my defense they were small fries. "My fries were small fries, it was like one fry, two fries, three fries, then boom, done."
He chuckled as he passed me the first beer he opened. "Why did you order small fries in the first place?"
I took the beer and reached out my hands for the fries still. "I didn't know they were gonna be that small of a quantity." I really wanted more fries.
He pushed my hand out of his way and popped the cap off of his own beer. "Nope."
"But you have two large fries!"
He nodded. "Yeah, because I ordered two large fries. Just as you ordered and ate your small fries." He took a swing at his beer as he unwrapped his burger.
