The buttered skillet sizzled as I used the silver spatula to flip over my grilled cheese. The aroma filled the air as the cheese melted into a ooey gooey consistency. My mouth watered, the savory scent filling my nostrils. The bread was crispy but not burnt, and I knew it was gonna hit the spot like I needed. A buttery grilled cheese with a side of tomato soup could never go wrong for a quick lunch.
"Girl, what you got cooking up in here?" I heard the loud voice of my roommate, Niecy rolling in from her eight a.m. class.
I turned to her, quickly putting the temperature on a low setting as I knew she would distract me once she walked in.
Welcome ladies and gents, Niecy Coleman. Niecy and I shared the apartment that Dean Yupkins blessed me with. She was going to school for nursing after changing her major about three times her freshman year. Now we were juniors and although I had moved in not too long ago, Niecy and I got along great. She hated her last roommate as the other girl was...a little different, i'll say.
Different in the aspect of having no people skills and not knowing when and what was appropriate to say at the right time.
Also a plus, Niecy was from the southside of Ridgeport, living in the same area in which I resided with my father. All in all, becoming her new roommate was a match made in heaven.
Niecy was about five-eight with wide hips and a bodacious body. People always assumed we were sisters with the slight similarities we shared, the only difference was I was shorter and probably a bit chubbier in the face. Although we shared similar physical attributes, we differed majorly in our style. While I resorted to bigger t-shirts, jeans and dirty sneakers most of the time, Niecy always dressed up. She loved flowy tanks, patterned rompers and even dresses. She wore her hair in single braids, in the south we refer to them as plaits.
Today she wore one of her floral dresses with strap sandals to match. Her hair was pulled back in a low ponytail and she had her bag dangling on her shoulder with books in her hand. She wore a bright smile on her face, showcasing her colored braces.
She sniffed the air dramatically, causing me to shake my head at her foolery. "Hmm! Is that grilled cheese I smell? My favorite?" She dropped her bag on our sofa, coming to me and resting her chin in the crook of my shoulder. "I only see one sandwich, you haven't started grilling mine yet?" She sang into my ear.
I pushed her head off my shoulder and flicked the air mockingly. "Don't be a pest," I said to her.
Reaching to the microwave, I revealed her sandwich indeed with her soup already portioned out and ready for her. She grinned, doing a little dance as she accepted her lunch. "Oh, Tosha, girl, I don't even know how I would survive without you in my life."
I laughed at, not only her dance, but her over exaggerated words too. "Yeah, yeah, I know. Remember this later when you're buying my Christmas gifts."
