"Come on guys, I've got skills!" I threw my hands and the air.
"No." Thomas said sternly, but Minho was on my side so I felt encouraged.
"Yeah, why not, Thomas?" Minho crossed his arms. "She could be a great Runner." I grinned in relief at Minho's comment.
Thomas frowned at Minho, then turned to me. "No, I won't allow you." I grunted as I rolled my eyes at him, then turned to Newt. "Newt?" I waited hopefully for his answer.
Newt stared as he thought for a moment. "I'm sorry, Mary." I whined."But why?" Then I paused. "Is it because I'm a girl?"
"Yes." Thomas whisper-shouted and I gasped at this. "Just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I can't do the things you can!" I walked away but Thomas grabbed my wrist. I turned around with my arms crossed.
"No, that's not what I meant!" Thomas said. "I know that you can do just as much as we can. But you're a girl and-" I tried to retort but he cut me off. "And girls shouldn't be going into a maze full of things that could harm them. You're supposed to be staying at a safe place and be protected." He said soothingly with a hopeful smile.
"Let's just get to the real bloody point, Tommy." Newt sighed. "We all know that when you say 'girl' you mean Mary." Thomas glanced up at me, but he removed his gaze as soon as I caught him. Then Newt turned to me. "I, myself, think that you could be a great Runner." I smiled excitedly, but Newt raised an index finger at me. "But I also think that it's too risky out there." I frowned.
"But," Minho spoke. "We could have a gathering." My face lightened up, but Thomas's was the opposite.
*two days later*
"I'm officially a Runner." I said proudly to Thomas as I walked to get our stuff and as expected, Thomas freaked out. "WHAT?" Thomas said loudly. "I said I'm a Runner." I said nonchalantly, then he grabbed my arm to stop. "When the shuck did the Gathering happen?"
I shrugged. "Just this morning." Then went back walking.
"And I wasn't there?" He said from behind, and jogged to my side once again."Being a Runner is insane." He whisper-shouted as he waved his hands everywhere.
"Are you saying you're insane then?" I raised an eyebrow an him.
"Mary, that's not the point it's just-"
"Thomas the fact that you care about me so much means a lot to me. It does." I smiled genuinely at him. "But just like you, there was something deep inside me that kept on nagging me to become a Runner." I said soothingly. "So if anything, you're right beside anyway." I gave him a sympathetic smile, then determinedly, I smiled and took his hand in mine. "Why don't we just be insane together, shall we?"
*******
"Be quiet.." Thomas whispered as he put a protective hand on my back.
"I regret becoming a Runner." I said breathlessly. But I didn't really mean that.. Well maybe a bit.
"I don't want to say I told you so." He raised an eyebrow and stared at me.
I rolled my eyes."Oh whatever."
"clink-clink-clink"
"Holy shuck.." I mumbled as my chest rose and fell faster than earlier. The deafening sounds of metals scraping together were getting louder than earlier and it scared the hell out of me. The only time I encountered a Griever was when Thomas and I forgot which path to run, but it was much farther than this time.
