Lullabies

Songs that sing you to sleep.

My lullabies have always been the songs that make me dance around the room. The songs that give me strength. The songs that I think describe me. That let me know there are others who feel the way I do.

There are other kinds of lullabies. Actions, memories. Things that stand out in our brain.

Lately my lullaby has been her. Thoughts of her arms around me, my face in her hair. Two hearts beating in rhythm.

Strange how one night next to the one you love. One night wrapped in her arms, sheets, and dreams. That one night makes sleeping alone all the worse.

The worst lullabies are the turbulent emotions that follow at my heels.

Crying myself to sleep, or burrowing in between the wall and my bed. Falling asleep back turned to the room, angry at the world.

More often than anything else, it's boredom. Lying in the darkness waiting for sleep and silently hoping I won't wake up. Despair fills my heart at the thought of facing another day.
