Hermione's POV
The day went by incredibly quickly. The awkwardness of the morning forgotten, we spent most of the day out in the woods scouting the place and making sure we were not being followed. Ron was now in a new blue shirt with a gray jacket over it. I was still a little bit flustered by our water fight after breakfast. It's not like I saw him naked or anything, it was just that he was incredibly good looking. His muscles had toned over the last few years and quidditch had most definitely done him some good. He was perfectly built it wasn't normal. I was glad for a distraction.
Ron insisted that I check the place for spiders because he refused to stay within range of those 'huge-giant-Ron-eating-spiders' which I reminded him were Acromantula and he proceeded to not care. Since it took us so long to make sure there were no deadly insects around, we arrived back at the tent pretty late. I made a quick spaghetti lunch with Ron's help and we ate tiredly. We were finishing up, Ron doing the dishes as I cleaned the kitchen space when we heard a sound coming from outside. I turned around to look at Ron and saw in his face that he'd heard the sound too. I pull out my wand and gesture him to do the same.
We walked towards the entrance of the tent and peeked outside. I gasped softly and pushed Ron back into the tent.
"What? What is it?" I shushed him and started talking in whispers.
"Ron. You cast the spells around the tent, right?"
"Yeah, I did. What's out there?"
"And around the car?"
"The car? I think..." his eyes opened wide. He shook his head. I exhaled trying to keep my breathing level.
"Okay, so that's a problem,"
"What is it? I thought we scouted the place there was nothing there!"
"Yeah. The was nothing on the ground" I looked at him in the eyes "There's a griffin outside" His eyes widened.
"Like the..."
"Half eagle half lion yes. It must've flown in" He stared at me, his eyes full of fear. "Okay. Okay, okay, okay. What do I know about griffins? They are known for their speed, great hearing, and have sharp talons. Their feathers are rare and illegal for the creation of quills but used in the art of wand lore" I thought back to our defense against the dark arts lesson we had with Professor Snape "They are vicious and track their victims once they smell their scent. Great, so our spells won't work against it. It's only a matter of time before it fins us" Ron started pacing and I could tell he was freaking out. He looked up and stared determinedly at the entrance of the tent
"Okay. So, we know that it's are fast. It has sharp claws. And that it can smell us. However, he doesn't know that there are two of us, right?" I looked at him as I understood the idea forming in his head
"Okay... so you can use a disillusionment charm on yourself and I'll distract it while you immobilize it from behind. It might work if you don't make any noise"
"No, I'll distract it" he cast the charm on me silently and I looked at him worriedly. He then whispered softly but loud enough that I can hear "I want you as safe as possible". He then without warning stepped out of the tent and I resisted the urge to call out. I heard him loudly making his way out, away from the tent and out of the spell's borders.
"Hey chicken face! Will you stop messing with my stuff? Thank you." I smiled slightly as I left the tent quietly. Only Ron would've chosen to say that going into a fight. Why not?
The griffin's head snapped around and stared at Ron directly. His head tilted only ever so slightly as if wondering how stupid this boy was to come up to him. It turned around completely to face him and started sniffing the air. I walked up to it slowly, edging around it, as close to it as I dared to go. The griffin slowly started making his way towards Ron as he kept yelling stupid insults at it.
"Didn't your momma teach you not to touch things that aren't yours?" One step closer "Probably kicked you out of the nest by the looks of you," Two steps to go. Then, the griffin's nose flared, and it lunged at Ron. I wanted to cry out for him to move but Ron had fast reflexes. He dived to the side, rolled on the floor, and stood up again with twigs in his hair. I saw what he was doing. He was turning him around so I would be right behind it. I started moving since I had been frozen in fear. I moved as slowly and quietly as I could behind the creature, glancing from time to time at Ron. He was with his wand at the ready and dodging the claws of the griffin as it lashed out at him. I heard a thump and saw Ron stirring on the floor, groaning in pain by a tree. I don't know what came over me, but I was tired of the thing. So, I did the reasonable thing and charged it.
Okay, so not reasonable, but reckless and impulsive. Still, I couldn't just do nothing! I jumped on top of the griffin, and land on its neck. The beast buckled back and would've tossed me off its hide if I hadn't been grasping its feathers. It howled in pain some of the feathers got plucked off. It shook and thrashed around nearly, knocking my wand out of my hand. I steadied myself on the thing only motivated by the groans of pain coming from the pile of limbs that came from Ron. I clenched my feet on the sides of the griffin to remain straddled over it and aimed my wand at the griffin.
"Immobulus!" suddenly the creature froze, and I got knocked to the side due to the unexpected stop of movement. I sat up dazed from the fall and turned to the griffin. The griffin stood with a look of horror in its eyes, standing still with its front paws in the air. I didn't take my time to admire the scene though, because I immediately ran to Ron's aid.
I grabbed his face and pulled some twigs out of his hair. I looked for major wounds but there didn't seem to be anything wrong. Well, until I looked at his ankle. It was twisted in an awkward ankle and it was not looking great.
"Some fierce chicken that was," he muttered breathing out the words in pain
"Ron, you were so brave. I'm going to fix your ankle, okay? It's going to hurt but I need you to lay still." I hesitated "You can squeeze my hand if you want," I held out my hand and he held it firmly. I turned to his ankle and tried not to smile.
He's injured, stop it.
I turned his leg slightly and he sucked in a breath and gripped my hand tighter until his knuckles were white. However, I didn't care in the slightest. I was focused on fixing his ankle
"Okay here goes," I aimed my wand "Episkey" (A/N: I think that's the spell for minor injuries, right?) I heard a small crunch and his foot twisted back into its normal position. He grunted out in pain and stifled a scream as he gripped my hand impossibly tighter. I looked at him and stroked his hair out of his face, taking out twigs in the process.
"I know. It's over now. Ferula," bandages appeared out of thin air and started wrapping around his foot, strapping it tightly into a splint. He looked up at me and smiled weakly
"No such thing as an easy day for us right" I laughed letting out all the built-up tension and worry that was inside of me.
