Ron's POV

So much for heroics. I limped slightly on our way back to the tent. It wasn't that bad, but Hermione slid her arm around my waist to help and I wasn't going to complain. I sat on the couch and adjusted my bandages a little and Hermione went over to the car to bring it within the boundaries of our spells. I was still awestruck as to what had just happened. Hermione's disillusionment charm had worn out during the fight and I got to see her fight the Griffin and distract it from my useless body. God, she looked great. She looked so – stop! She kept telling me how brave I was and that she was surprised with how I fought the thing, but she had honestly done most of the work.

The day went by quickly, or so she told me because when we arrived at the tent I collapsed on the couch and passed out from the pain. Yeah, not so heroic. I woke up and it looked pretty late. I checked the time. It was nearly 7pm. My eyes widened. I'd slept through a whole day. The gas should be arriving any minute now and we'd be able to leave and head for Hogwarts as soon as possible so we could have our classes tomorrow. I still didn't understand how the gas people were going to find us, but I was too tired to care. My ankle injury was actually worse than I let on and I couldn't walk without Hermione's help. I didn't complain about it because I knew Hermione had done her best but, and I was shocked to think this, I really wanted to head for school tonight.

I heard Hermione talking outside with some guy named Andre who I guessed was from the gas station service fixing the car. Soon she came back and helped me out of the tent so we could pack up and leave. My ribs throbbed when she held me up, but I didn't say anything. I was sitting on a chair with the tent folded up on my lap for about 20 minutes when Hermione came over. The guy was gone.

"So, the car is ready. He just disapparated and he says that we're not so far from Hogwarts. You can actually see the lake from here. I can't believe we didn't see it" I tried to stand, almost crumbling to the floor had she not caught me.

"Okay, that ankle is most definitely worse. We have to get you there now" I merely nodded, not having the strength to complain. It was only a few minutes and we were already flying with the castle in the distance.

Hermione had taken the wheel and was trying not to show it, but I could tell she was very stressed. I felt terrible and so useless by not being able to help or reassure her, but I was in too much pain to move a muscle. Finally, after a long while I was able to make out the castle in the distance. We approached the castle slowly and veered away from the whomping willow to avoid further accidents. We landed roughly on the grounds and it jolted pain up my leg. There was definitely something wrong there.

I heard a loud creaking noise come from our left and we saw McGonagall standing there with a disapproving look on her face. Hermione jumped out of the car and rushed to my door to help me out. Once McGonagall saw me her expression melted into one of concern. She flicked her wand and a stretcher appeared next to her. I was half limping half being dragged by Hermione to the stretcher. I was dropped on the stretcher carefully, but it nudged my ankle slightly and I screamed out in pain. I heard Hermione stifle a sob. I looked over at her and saw she had been crying. God that just made me feel worse. She saw me looking at her and looked away. She had been trying to keep it in for me, but I could tell she was scared. I wanted to comfort her. Make some sort of joke to lighten up the mood but I had no energy form a complete sentence

"My goodness, Miss Granger what is going on?"

"I tried to help, but his injury is much worse than he let on and I don't trust myself to mend his bones and-"

"Dear, start from the beginning," I saw out of the corner of my eye that she flicked her wand and I felt the stretcher rise. I was levitating towards the hospital wing.

"We had set camp near some woods and...we scouted the place and there was nothing there but...a griffin...and it flew out of nowhere...we tried to..." I was grateful to be taken out of earshot because it was heartbreaking hearing Hermione tell McGonagall our accident in between sobs. I flew in through an open window into the infirmary and somehow Madam Pomphrey already knew I was coming because she was rushing around handing me potions to drink flicking her wand that gave me certain jabs of pain and sometimes soothed certain wounds.

I don't remember passing out, but I do remember thinking about my picture of Hermione that I'd seen ripped to pieces, on the ground by the woods, just after the griffin had attacked. It had not been a good day.
