I scrub the floors of the ballroom until I can see my own reflection. It looks nothing like the reflection I saw on Saturday. On Saturday, I was a more confident version of myself. I pick up my cleaning supplies and head to the cleaning supplies closet. This Monday had gone by extremely slow for me. I felt like a little cloud was over my head all day with angry thunder and pitiful rain.
"Dont you look awfully chipper today?" Lizzy walks up to me and nudges me slightly with her elbow. Her smile is too infectious.
"You could say I woke up on the wrong side of the bed," or the wrong dimension, I mumble internally.
"Well, let me take these from you," she tries getting my cleaning supplies out of my grasp. I pull my hands back a bit.
"No Lizzy, what do you think you're doing?" I ask her. "I am perfectly capable of doing things for myself, even when I am sad."
"Cartia just let me help you. Ill take these from you and then we can have a girls night!" she claps her hands together slightly bouncing on her feet. Saying no to her is like kicking a puppy, I can't say no.
"Fine," I sigh and hand Lizzy my cleaning supplies to her. "On one condition though," I tell her before she leaves.
"Sure," Lizzy says.
"I need to shower because I feel gross, I tell her with a disgusted face." Lizzy barks out a very unladylike laugh.
"Yeah, showering always makes me feel better," she shoos me away and heads towards the cleaning supplies closet. I turn on my heels and head the opposite way towards my room. I decide to take the longer way to my room tonight. I could really use the extra time to gather my thoughts and be positive. I also want to get more familiar with the palaces outline. I have to start investigating stuff other than books in this palace.
My uncle is the King, there have to be clues laying around the palace. The existence of my parents can't be completely wiped from existence in this Kingdom. My hope is starting to dim, the only way I can think of finding clues is this palace.
My thoughts have had a mind of their own the past few weeks because suddenly I don't recognize the corridor I'm in. "You have got to be kidding me," I mumble under my breath. I run my hands against the cool white hallways of the palace to calm me down.
I debate sitting down and crying out of frustration and hopelessness. Its the easier option, but not the one I need to make to find my parents. I cant cry whenever I feel like. I put my back against the cool wall, and take in a deep breath. I should have learned more about the layout of the palace.
My brain focuses on my surroundings and I hear faint music in the distance. The music is so muffled I can barely hear the music now that my mind is cleared. Whoever is in that room can help me. I take one final look at the walls and see no hidden maid corridor entrances.
I walk quietly at first, so that the clicking of my shoes wouldn't hide the music. Then the music just got louder and louder. I pick up the pace of my stride and head towards the sound. These walls were foreign to me and I had no other choice.
The music was inside a room with tall white doors blocking the person. The door had intricate white trimming that only a palace would have. I debated outside the door scared about getting in trouble. What if the person I asked for help got angry that a maid was 'lost'?
I was left with very little options. I sighed and opened the door very slowly. There was no point in knocking, the person would not be able to hear me with the loud melancholic music drowning the room.
I open the door slowly, my heart nearly beats out of my body at that moment. The room is almost all glass with a grand white piano in the center. That's not where the music is coming from though, there is a large record player playing the music at its loudest volume.
He was there again. Nathaniel. I just had to show up in the same room as him. Out of all the rooms inside this palace, I ran into him.
He is reading a large book. His brows are slightly furrowed together and he seems deep in concentration. I cant possibly ask him for help. He might get mad, or he might recognize me from Saturday.
I started to close the door quietly even though there was loud music canceling out all noises. Just as I am about to close the door, the music stops abruptly. I stop all movements like a deer caught in headlights. I even stop breathing from the shock.
Nathaniel looks up from his book with an eyebrow raised at me. He closes his book and walks over to me confidently. It is very apparent he is royalty, the next king.
"Do I know you?" he asks me in a serious manner. I shake my head lying in less than an instant. Im getting too good at it.
"I took the wrong turn and I need help finding the maid corridors," I tell him, suddenly nervous. He cant find out it was me on Saturday he was talking to. Who knows what he would do if he found out a maid snuck into a royal ball.
"Are you new here?" he asks as he puts the book he was reading on top of the piano.
"Yes," I reply.
"Ill help you, follow me." he starts walking out of the room and starts leading me down the hall. As I walk behind him I get a breeze of his cologne.
"Thank you, I am so sorry for the inconvenience," I tell him gratefully. I really don't know what to make of him as we continue walking down the hall. The times I have seen him he's seemed distant and cold or very warm and kind.
"You remind me of someone I have met," he tells me as he walks. I try to cover my face with my hair even more terrified he will recognize me. I'm not sure if it's appropriate for staff to joke with the crown prince, but it's my self defense mechanism at the moment.
"When you have a generic face that happens a lot." I tell him sarcastically. He turns to look back at me and grins slightly.
We walk in silence the rest of the way. Turns out I took more than one wrong turn. He stops in front of a very neatly disguised maid corridor door and he opens the door for me.
"You shouldnt have brought me all the way here. You could have just given me the instructions," I tell him, grateful for his kindness.
"Its okay, I wanted to." he replies with a kind smile. I start stepping into the maid corridor entrance when he stops me. He gently holds onto my elbow to stop me in place.
"I know its you." he says with a final grin and leaves me. I stand at the entrance alone and flabbergasted. My mouth opens like a fish out of water and my mind screams out of terror. What have I done?
