Nick and y/n had always been friends. Since kindergarten. Y/n always felt that the pronouns they were previously given did not fit them. Y/n tried both he/him and she/her pronouns but they didn't feel right.
Eventually y/n tried they/them pronouns and it felt like something clicked. It just felt so...right. Y/n had been going off they/them pronouns for about 2 weeks now.
They haven't told anyone yet.
Today was the day they decided they were gonna tell their best friend, Nick. Y/n had invited him over the day before, telling him that they had something say.
Nick walked over to y/n's house which was right down the street, once he got there he rang the doorbell. Y/n opened the door with a bright smile on their face,
"Hey nick"
"Hey n/n (nickname), how are you" he asked,
"Im good" y/n said, playing with the hem of their jacket sleeve, they were nervous and Nick could tell,
"Ok, so tell me the news," he said, wrapping an arm around their shoulders to try to make them less nervous. Y/n sucked in a deep breath and quickly blurted it out.
"Nick, my pronouns are they/them now"
Nick looked surprised for a second then his face broke into a large smile,
"really?! Oh n/n that's great! I'm so happy for you" he said as he embraced them in a hug. Y/n let out a smile and then a laugh.
"I was so worried you wouldn't support me, I have been trying to find the right moment for the past two weeks but it seems you're always busy"
"N/n whenever you need to talk to me, I'll be there, no matter what I'm doing, ok?" Y/n nodded and stared into his eyes.
"Well, y/n, since you said something very big, I'm just gonna come clean, y/n l/n (last name), since the 5th grade (age: 11), I have been in love with you.
Every little thing you do, every smile, they all make me fall in love with you more. Now I'm not asking for my love to be returned, I just thought I'd tell you," he said, face flushing red,
"Nick, I-"
"It's ok if you don't like me back, I'm sure there's another guy or girl you want or someone else that's better for you and I totally understand it and-"
"Nick, I like you too," y/n said, making his rambling come to an end. He looked at them surprised,
"You do?"
Y/n nodded. Nick grinned and pressed a light kiss to their cheek.
Y/n giggled and hugged their best friend, well maybe he was more now. Whatever they were, y/n was happy with it.
"I love you" Nick whispered into their ear, their face turned a deep shade of red but they didn't hesitate to say it back,
"I love you too sappynappy"
