Kelsea:
Every time I looked at him, I found myself smiling. When I looked into those brown eyes, I lost myself in them, and when I see him smiled, I melted. I could see us being who we were, where we were.
"Kelsea... Earth to Kelsea?" Jared said, snapping me out of my daydream.
"Yeah?" I asked with a little jump.
"So?" He asked, expecting an answer. I couldn't give him one, I hadn't heard a word he said in the last few minutes.
"So... What?"
"What should I do for Skylar for our anniversary. She's expecting a huge romantic gesture and I have no idea what to do." Skylar Morgan, the queen bee at Seattle High, and Jared's girlfriend. I let out a soft groan, which I think he ignored.
"And, this is my decision, why?" I asked, slightly annoyed, not wanting anything to do with Skylar. He gave me a look.
"Fine. She likes to watch the sunset, right?" I asked.
"Yeah, I guess." He replied.
"Well, take her out to the beach and watch the sun set together. Then take her out to dinner at her favorite restaurant."
"Okay, great idea, K."
That's our thing. He calls me, "K" and I call him, "J". We've called each other that since the third grade with Mr. Braddock. He's moving up in the world. He's one of the assistant principals at our school.
"Okay, you ready to go, K." Jared asked me after I finished my iced cappuccino.
"Yeah, sure. I'm driving." I answered, walking out the door of Cate's Café, our favorite coffee shop.
"Kelsea, I don't think that's a good idea." He said running out after me.
I just stood there, staring at his new red Camaro. I'd always wanted to drive it and since I had just received my license, I could. I glanced at him with a pseudo-sad look on my face. "I'm not that bad of a driver, am I?"
"Kelsea, I hate to say it, but you drive like a lunatic."
"Hey!" I said, punching him in the arm.
"Ow. Okay, okay. You can drive" He tossed me the keys.
Jared:
I can't believe I just handed my car keys over to her. I slid into the car and put my seatbelt on. I prayed silently to myself that she wouldn't wreck my new car.
"Stop looking so scared, J. I promise, I won't wreck your new car."
"Let's hope." I whispered to myself.
She started the car and turned the music on. As we drove down the road, she sang along with Dierks Bentley.
I've always loved to hear her sing; she has such an amazing voice. It's one of the many things I love about her. Ten minutes later, she pulled into my driveway and turned the car off.
"See. Not a scratch."
"Surprisingly... Ow!" I yelped after she punched me in the arm.
"You knew you had it coming." She's right, I did.
She jumped out of the car with her phone in hand. I watched her across the lawn to her house. Her blonde hair in a ponytail off to the side, light green t-shirt tied tightly around her waist. Her boots clacked against the sidewalk, with her grey jeans stuffed inside. My eyes slid up to her face.
"What time's your game tonight?" She asked me from her porch.
"Seven. Do you want a ride? I should head over in about fifteen minutes, but if you want to tag along, you're more that welcome too.
"Yeah, sure. I'll drive, again."
I watched her walk into her house, then I headed for mine. My sister, Holly, sat on the couch in the living room, struggling to concentrate on the book she had in hand, with the baby crying.
I walked up the stairs and into the nursery. "Here let me take over."
"Don't you have to head to your game?"
"In like 10 minutes. Why don't you go relax in the living room?"
"Okay. He's all yours."
After she left, I looked down at Asher, my baby brother. "Why do you give her such a hard time?" He stared blankly at me as I snapped the buttons on his onesie, then wrapping him in his sky-blue blanket. The front door clicked shut and I heard my mom and Kelsea trade pleasantries.
My mom said, "Jared's in the nursery with Asher."
Her steps grew louder as she ascended the stairs. She knocked on the doorpost and said, "Can I come in?"
I picked up Asher and said, "K, you're always welcome."
She giggled, and took Asher out of my hands, and when he looked at Kelsea he had a little smile on his face.
She walked into the living room, Asher in arms. My mom looked up from her book and a smile escaped her tired face. "You guys are so good with him." My mom said, getting up.
Kelsea said, "If you want Jared and I can take him over to my house before we leave."
My mom replied, "That would be great. Thank you." By then I had my duffle bag in hand ready to go.
"You all set, J?" I nodded.
My mom called out to me, "We'll see you at your game."
"Okay." I called back. We walked over to her house and gave Asher to her mom for the night.
I hopped into the driver seat before K could. She got into the passenger seat without an argument.
When we got to the school, as we were walking in, guys that past whistled at Kelsea, as they always did when she walked by. I just wanted to take off my Cowboys' sweatshirt and cover her with it.
Once inside, she headed for the bleachers as I headed for the locker room. She called out, "Good luck, J!"
