“You’ll never catch me!” Edward shouted as he ran around the back yard. “You are too little.”

“Oh yes I will!” I called back. “Just because you are one year older than me does not mean I can’t catch you.” I pushed myself harder to try and tag him, but he was too fast. At nine I really did not have a chance; however, I was too stubborn to give up trying.

“Edward, Elizabeth! Dinner time, please come inside.” Mother shouted form the back door.

“Please can we play for five more minutes Mother? Lizzy still needs to tag me.” Edward, who was usually very obedient, pleaded.

I seconded his plea. “Yes Mother. Please, just five more minutes, I almost had him.”

“No. It is time for dinner and your Father will be home soon. You both must wash up.”

“Father’s coming home!” we both cried excitedly.

“Yes, he is home on leave for the week.” Mother replied.

“Yippee!” Edward shouted as I danced to Mother to give her a happy hug.

We both rushed off to our rooms to change out of our play cloths. As I entered my room I noticed a new tare in my black tights. Oh No! Mother will be unhappy with me. Well I had better hurry she will be more upset if I was late to dinner. I changed into my second best dress, it was my father’s favorite and I knew it would cheer him up. He was always so sad when he was home on leave.

I met Edward in the hall and slowly descended the stairs after him. As we entered the dining room we saw Father sitting at the head of the table dressed in his uniform.

“Papa, you’re home!” I said as I walked over to greet him. “Oh, I am so happy!”

“Me too, my little princess. I missed you and your brother so much!” he said in his deep, comforting voice.

“We missed you too Father.” Edward said as he came to hug Father. He then took me by the hand and led me to my seat. He really was a good bother I had to admit. He did a good job of looking after me even though I tended to be headstrong and stubborn.

“It is time for grace.” Mother said when we were all seated. “Dear Lord in Heaven, we are thankful that our loving husband and father has come back to us safely. Please bless us with continued safety and happiness. In the savior’s name. Amen.”

“Amen.” We all chorused after her.

“I know it is not very fancy, but at least it is a respectable meal.” Mother apologized.

“Nonsense, dear, it is delicious!” Father reassured her. “Children maybe after dinner we could go for a walk about town before supper.”

“That sounds wonderful.” Mother said clearly cheered by the idea. So after dinner was cleared away we put on our coats and took to the town. It was only three in the afternoon and already the sun was hidden behind clouds. We headed in the direction of the general store. Upon our arrival Father gave us each a shilling saying, “Be careful how you spend your shilling. Edward watch out for your sister, your mother and I will be back soon.”
