Lavender sat with his tail curled around his talons, staring out at the sea. Another dragon was emerging from the trees and bushes behind him, her wings a shiny silver with a hint of light purple. Her red eyes glowed brightly against the dark grey clouds as she sat down beside him.

Crystal. Lavender thought.

"Fallingwing said you would be here," she said, "this is your favorite place to go when you want to be alone. Thunder rolled across the sky and rain started to patter down on the two dragons' scales.

"We should probably go back to the mountains, it's starting to rain," Crystal suggested after a bit.

"Yeah, we should," Lavender said.

The two dragons jumped up into the sky and flew through the storm to their home in the Western Tooth Mountains.

After the storm Lavender wandered out of the cave that he had lived in for the past twelve years. When he outgrew the orphanage, he was sent to live on his own in a tiny cave in a nice clearing in the warm, damp forest below the towering mountains.

Lavender wanted to see Crystal again but he knew she would be running and swimming with Wavecrusher. Wavecrusher had no wings and is more known as one of the deep water diving dragons, (also known as Sea dragons) and was happy with his life without wings.

Lavender sighed, he wouldn't see her today so it surprised him when Crystal swooped down in front of him.

"I thought you would be with Wavecrusher," Lavender said, "how come you came out here?"

"Wavecrusher was called out to the sea for some hunting and told me he wouldn't be back at shore for a while," Crystal answered.

"So you came all the way over here to be with me? Wow, and you're planning on being with him!"

Crystal looked faintly embarrassed, "I was bored, that's all. But I- I still would like to fly with you."

"Of course," Lavender said smoothly, "I would do anything for you." he noticed the look on her face and immediately regretted saying that. "Awwww, you big sap," Crystal giggled.

"Stop that," Lavender said, "I was trying to be nice."

"You're always nice," Crystal said silkily.

"Now who's the big sap," Lavender laughed.

"Oh, shut up Lavender," Crystal said, leaping into the air and beating her translucent, purple wings.

"OK," Lavender said as he joined her in the air.

The two dragons flew over the forests, cliffs, canyons, soaring over the homes of other dragons and hatchlings practicing flying or studying nature. They flew around the spires of the Great Flame castle watching red dragons fly all around them. Normally fire dragons ignored ice or nature dragons but now they seemed to be distressed, and growled at Lavender and Crystal when they flew too close.

"I wonder what's up with them," Lavender said once they were out of earshot of the other dragons.

"They're fire dragons Lavender," Crystal huffed, "they don't show any respect."

"Yeah I know but they seem to be a little more... I don't know- grumpy?"

Crystal's only response was a small snort.

They flew away from the castle and the rich dragons' houses, towards the Ancient's Nest. The Ancient's Nest was a large group of mountains that guarded the Flame Mountain tribe. (Lavender and Crystal's tribe.) legends said that the founders of the Flame Mountain tribe had magic and had created the mountains in the hope that it would provide a safe home for their children. Little did they know that their children found the other tribes and formed their very own. But the founders of the tribe- the Ancients- were Elderly, they decided to find their final resting place by creating caves in their mountains with the last bit of their magic. Now their skeletons remained in the back of the caves, and many generations of others as well.
