5 - The Chase Begins

"Chancellor," Obi-Wan and Mace said as they removed the hand cuffs from the old man. "Master Windu, Master Kenobi, I won't lie in saying I thought Anakin would be joining you. Mace raised an eyebrow at this statement, confused why the Chancellor didn't address the young Jedi by his proper title.

"Jedi Skywalker, had other arrangements," Mace said, sending a confused and suspicious look at the old man. Palpatine was about to respond when he suddenly looked up at the entrance. "Dooku," he said as the two masters turned around and ignited their lightsabers.

"Master Jedi," said Dooku, as two battle droids marched up behind him.

"Oh this will be fun," said Obi-Wan, starting to wish Anakin was there to help.

"No sign of Maul yet General," reported Rex. "Though I think we should alert the Mandalorians to close off the city." Bo-Katan straightened at this idea, sick of waiting around for Maul to reveal himself. "I'll go tell them." Anakin nodded in response and Bo with a few troopers left the area.

It was then Anakin's comm went off. "General, I think we have something," said Vaughn, a clone trooper scouting the area. "Good work Vaughn, I'll come check it out." Anakin said, shutting off the holocall. "I'll go see what they found, you two wait here for any news about the situation with the chancellor." Anakin said to Ahsoka and Rex, leaving them by themselves. He began to ran towards the far side of the area, leaving Ahsoka and Rex to start a conversation.

"So uh," Rex started, trying to find something to talk about. He never used to find talking to the Togruta so hard, yet here he was, at a complete loss for words. "It'll be great if we capture Maul, the sooner he's in the hands of the Republic, the sooner this war is over." He said, finally thinking of something to talk about.

"I never really thought about that, Ahsoka replied, finding it equally difficult to talk to her friend for some reason. "As Jedi, we were meant to be keepers of the peace not soldiers, yet ever since I've been a Padawan all I have done is fight the Republic's battles." Rex looked up at Ahsoka with respect obvious in his eyes.

"I agree. We clones have mixed feelings about the war. Without it, we wouldn't exist." He said, displaying the multiple points of view taken by the clones. They were bred to fight and their lives to be dispensable, but Ahsoka knew they were so much more.

"You are not a life waiting to end Rex." She said, knowing exactly what was going through his head. "You are one of the closest people to me, and to me, your more than a life made in a factory." Rex looked back up at her and smiled. They embraced once again, relishing in the fact they finally were together again.

"Oh ho ho," Said an amused voice. Rex and Ahsoka quickly released their grasps on each other. "What do we have here?" Rex turned around to see Fives with crossed arms and an amused grin on his face. He had just been deemed fit to go back onto the battlefield by the officials on Coruscant, after he claimed the chips in the clones' minds were made to kill all the Jedi. Little did the Generals know that Rex and Fives were working together to see if what Fives said was true.

"Haha, Jesse owes me fifty credits!" Fives said gleefully, about to run off and find him. "On what?" Ahsoka said, curious to why Jesse was suddenly in debt. "On whether you two were together or not of course! I won the bet! You guys are getting a little to 'friendly'," he said, putting air quotes on 'friendly'. Ahsoka and Rex promptly blushed at that comment. "The commander and I are just friends Fives, now go back to your post." Said Rex, eager to get Fives away from him and Ahsoka. "Sure Rex, whatever you say," said Fives, giving a smirk to his brother and then leaving promptly. Rex simply pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance.

Suddenly, Rex's com link went off. "Rex? It's General Skywalker. Vaughn has found something." Rex looked up briefly at Ahsoka before answering Anakin. "We'll be right there General." He said, following Ahsoka who was already sprinting off to find Anakin. He hung up the comment and sprinted after her, wondering what was about to come....
