I didn’t want to do this. I didn’t want to lose the one man I loved and was ever going to love.

"Lucy, you need to sign the papers." My mother said.

I kept looking between my mother and father to my husband, who sat across from me in a chair in a large conference room. He looked equally bitter about having to sign our divorce papers. I looked to my father, eyes pleading for him to side with me but he only looked to the ground.

"We don’t want to sign the papers." JJ, my husband said.

"You’re both eighteen years old, both way too young to marry. I don’t know what either of you were thinking, running off and doing something so stupid!" my mother shouted.

"We were thinking we love each other and we want to be together for the rest of our lives." I said tearfully.

JJ reached over the table separating us and put his hand over mine.

"Dad please don’t let her make me do this." I pleaded. Once again looking to my dad for some form of support.

"I’m sorry Luce; I’m at a loss here." He said shamefully.

"Do you think just because we sign these it will stop us from running off and getting married again?" JJ asked.

"She’s not going to see you again after this." My mother spat.

"I’m not signing these papers." JJ spat back.

"What life can you give each other? You both need to finish college."

"I can give her the world if that’s what she wants." JJ said.

My mother sneered.

"Don’t make this even uglier than it needs to be JJ. As soon as you start school you’ll start football and forget all about her and she’ll be lonely and neglected. You can find someone else to be your trophy wife… if you can even make it in the big league." She said.

"Mother!" I shouted at her. She only glared back at me.

"I’m not divorcing her." JJ said sternly.

"How about we just take a breathe? Lets all take a break and come back in thirty minutes to give them a chance to talk." The lawyer interjected before anything else could be said. Everyone nodded in agreement and dispersed out of the room.

I remained seated. I felt numb. I didn’t want to lose JJ but the more I thought about it, what could we offer each other besides love?

"What do you want to do Lulu?" He asked brining me out of my train of thought.

"I don’t want to lose you, but if I don’t do this, mother wont pay for my schooling."

"Don’t worry about that." JJ said.
