Chapter 13
JJ’s POV
“What about this color?” Lucy asked holding up another paint sample.
Now that we knew the gender of our baby, it was nicer to call it by a name. We could also plan out the nursery better. For Lucy that was a big deal. She wanted a theme and a color scheme. I knew the baby wouldn’t care what its room looked like but she did. It gave her something to look forward to and during the day now that she was working less.
“It’s nice. But maybe a shade darker? That looks like it would blend in with the color that the wall is already.”
Baby Watt was due in a few short weeks and I was getting more excited as the due date got closer. I’m sure Lucy was just as excited too. I’m guessing she would just be happy not to be pregnant anymore so she could see her feet again. And so the press would stop commenting about her “baby bump”. She felt she was way passed having a bump when she was twenty-four weeks. But here we were now when she’s at thirty-seven weeks and she said she looks like a whale. I just shake my head whenever she speaks of such non-sense.
“I really like this one.” She said, once again holding up another paint sample.
“I like that one too. It will definitely go with the bedding you picked out.” I said, hoping it would speed the process along.
Don’t get me wrong picking stuff out for your baby was fun and exciting but not when you have a very pregnant girlfriend who cant make her mind up about anything. She smiled at me and went to the counter to have the associate mix the paint.
“You do know you’re not allowed to paint the room right?” I asked.
“Yes JJ. My mom and dad are flying in next week to paint and to help me put the room back together.” She said rolling her eyes.
I hate hormones. Especially the pregnant ones.
“I’m just looking out for you guys.” I said.
“Yes JJ, I know.”
“Why are you mad?” I asked when we got back to the car.
“You really think I’d put our child in harms way?” She asked tearfully.
Oh boy…
“No Luce. It was just a reminder. I know you never would.”
“Then why do you say stuff like that to me?” She said, wiping a stray tear away.
“I don’t know babe. I’m really sorry I hurt your feelings.”
She looked down and began playing with her wedding ring. She started doing this more and more lately. Sometimes I wondered if she regretted eloping with me.
“You regret it?” I asked when the silence became too much.
“No… I just can’t believe we ran off and eloped again.” She smiled.
“Your dad still mad about it?” I asked.
“No, he said he seen it coming like he did the first time.” She said.
“I’m sorry they couldn’t be here for it this time.” I said sincerely.
“It’s ok. At least your family was there.”
“Just like the first time.” I said.
“They always did stand behind us.” She said.
“I know your dad would’ve too if he could have.”
She only nodded and stared out the window the rest of the car ride home. I know talking about her past was difficult but she’d overcome so much and so had her father.  They were in much better places now than they were years ago.
“You ok?” I asked once we were in the house.
“Yea just thinking about what a crazy year it’s been.” She sighed.
“But a good crazy year right?”
“Of course.” She said with a warm smile.
“I have a surprise for you. Go up to the nursery.”
She eyed me questioningly.  I just smiled and motioned for her to go upstairs as I followed behind. She slowly opened the door to the baby’s room.
“SURPRISE!”  Her family yelled.
She shrieked, grabbed her stomach and doubled over.
I caught her before she hit the ground.
“Lucy, what’s wrong?” I asked frantically, checking her over.
“JJ… the baby’s coming.”
Those four words meant my life would change forever.
