The room was buzzing as everyone panicked after I announced my water broke. I just remained standing, relatively calm as I watched everyone run around like their heads were cut off.
“Dad are you ok?” I asked.
My dad was looking pretty pale and like he was going to pass out any minute. He just nodded and sat down in the rocking chair.
“Lucy do you have your bag ready for the hospital?” Jackie asked.
I told her where she could find it along with the baby’s things. I was worried about my dad. He was looking worse by the minute.
“Dad, you really don’t look good. Are you sure you’re ok?” I asked once more.
“My chest hurts.” He said as he fell to his knees on the floor.
“Jackie! Call an ambulance now!” I screamed as Sage started CPR.
I was hit with another contraction as I knelt down to my dad. He was having trouble breathing and it was a horrid sight to watch someone you love struggling to live.
Luckily the ambulance got there right away and took dad while the rest of us followed behind in JJ’s car. Once we reached the hospital Jackie dropped me and JJ off at the maternity entrance and met the ambulance at the ER entrance.
“I know you’re worried about your dad but right now I need you to think about having our baby.” JJ said once we were admitted and in a room.
I was in pain but I was also worried about my dad so that was taking my mind off the contractions.
“Have you heard anything?” I asked once the last contraction was over.
JJ shook his head no. I figured no news was good news at this point.
The doctor came in and checked me, saying I was fully dilated.
Everything was going so fast. It seemed like my water broke only a few minutes but it was actually hours and now I was getting ready to push out a child that I’ve nested for nine months. It was really overwhelming but the good kind. I took JJ’s advice and blocked my dad out of my mind and remained positive that he’d get to meet his first grandchild.
After an hour of pushing I heard the most beautiful sound in the world. JJ was beaming with pride as the doctor placed our son on my chest.
“He’s perfect J.” I said looking him over.
He had my black hair but JJ’s blue eyes. No doubt he’d be a heartbreaker someday.
“Yea he is.” JJ beamed.
While they took our son to get cleaned up JJ stepped out to call his family to let them know the baby was here. I felt bad they missed the birth because I wasn’t due for another three weeks but they would get more alone time with him when they did arrive.
I was getting anxious waiting on word of my dad.
I expected JJ when the door opened but it was Sage. The look on her face said it wasn’t good.
“Is he?” I started to ask but I couldn’t finish.
She shook her head no.
“Its not good Lucy, they’re not sure what’s going to happen. He had a heart attack and they want to do heart surgery right away but he won’t go until he sees you and the baby.” She said.
“How long does he have if he doesn’t go into surgery right now?”
“Not long.” She said quietly.
I threw the covers off of me while sage helped me to my feet. I know I wasn’t supposed to be out of bed yet but I wasn’t losing my dad either.
“I need baby Watt please.” I said tapping on the nursery window.
“Ma’am you shouldn’t be-“
“Yea I know but I have a family emergency and my father wants to see his grandson before he goes into major heart surgery so give me MY baby NOW.” I said as she stared dumbfounded at me.
I gently picked up my son and was greeted by Sage with a wheelchair, JJ following behind her.
“Don’t even say a word JJ.” I said.
“I wasn’t going to babe. I would do the same thing.”
Sage parked me in front of my dad’s hospital door. JJ helped me out of the wheelchair and into my dad’s room. It was scary to see him hooked up to so many machines and tubes. Jackie smiled when she saw us.
My dad opened his eyes as I approached his bed and a sad smile formed on his face.
“Hey dad.” I whispered.
“Hey LuLu. Who’s that handsome fella you got there?”
I turned the baby so that my dad could see his full face.
“This is Dustin James.” I said proudly.
“Well hello DJ, I’m your grandpa.” My dad said holding out his finger to Dustin.
I tried really hard not to cry as my son stared at his grandfather and wrapped his hand around my dad’s finger. I could tell they had an instant connection and it was breaking my heart to think my dad wouldn’t be here to see him grow up.
The doctor came in and informed us they had to take my dad back to surgery. We all told him we loved him and watched them roll him to the operating room. JJ insisted I go back to the maternity ward to rest. Sage and Jackie promised to let me know as soon as they heard something. While I rested JJ bonded with his son. It was amusing to see this giant man holding a teeny tiny baby but it was one of the most precious things I’ve ever seen. We quickly learned our baby ate A LOT more than what the hospital was starting him off at.
A few hours later Jackie and Sage appeared in my room. I already knew he didn’t make it through surgery by the looks on their faces.
“Well he at least got to see Dustin.” I said through tears.
“He loved you so much Lucy.” Jackie said.
“Do you want to hold your grandson?” I asked handing him off to her as she smiled through her tears.
“Lucy?” JJ said pulling me out of my thoughts.
“Yea?”
“I think we need to change his name.”
I eyed him questioningly.
“His name should be Jackson.” JJ said.
“Are you sure?”
“I’m positive.”
“Jackson James.” I said out loud.
Sage and Jackie Looked at me and smiled.
“Well little Jack how do you like your name?” Sage asked.
“I think he likes it just fine.” Jackie said smiling down at him. “After all he’s got a guardian angel named Jack now.”
