Chapter 32: Loose Ends
Katelyn Bishop
Her heart buzzed just looking at Flint. In many ways they were right where they began, but they were so much further. The subway rattled again and the tip of the gun pressed against his muscular back. Katelyn hated doing this, but she knew she had to. Sadness fizzled around her frayed edges.
Katelyn's heart raced in impatience as the subway thudded along.
Her eyes swung down in shame but finally, their stop came up and Katelyn's world folded up on itself. Flint looked at her with worry drumming in his weary heart. Katelyn never wanted to make him feel like this, but she had no choice.
Getting up, she pushed Flint along.
Chicago's cold streets turned ashen under their feet as they felt like this was the final boss battle.
The sun lit a lone fire in the darkness, guiding them straight towards the center of it.
Katelyn instinctively wanted to hold Flint's hand because she was scared, but her hand was stuck to the trigger as they crawled closer and closer to their destination and time seemed to stop itself to soak in the danger she felt in her heart.
"We're here," Katelyn finally said, pulling her out of her head which was calculating their chance of death at about a whopping 100% chance.
The only thing Katelyn could say was she didn't bring a knife to a gun fight.
She brought a hostage, Katelyn just hoped that Flint was worth as much to them as he was worth to her. Staggering up the steps, both of their hearts and minds fastened to the idea that both of their lives would be up for ransom when they walked in that room.
But, Katelyn had to move.
She had to save everyone.
Because sometimes, you have to be your own hero.
Gripping on Flint's shoulder, she dragged him along until they came to the door. In crimson ink the numbers bled into Katelyn's broken heart. Katelyn didn't dare to knock. She just entered. And there was Carter standing in the middle of the room.
A smirk poured from his lips as Katelyn's gun shook in her hand.
Slowly, they both moved forward until they saw that Carter was dead.
A scarlet eternity punctured his head with a bullet wound.
But, that only meant Jay had tied loose ends. They were next. Katelyn could feel it. Searching the apartment, she slammed the doors opened while Flint cried out about Carter being gone. Katelyn didn't understand how Flint could care for that man at all.
Then, the lights which were dimmed as they entered, they suddenly turned on.
Jay's unmistakable scar made his smirk whole and he laughed as if it were all funny to him. "You, stupid, stupid girl. You even brought him back to me how I wanted him."
Katelyn's heart instantly stopped as she turned to face him.
"Jay," Katelyn sneered, "I have Flint. Now let Wynn and the rest go. Now!"
He just laughed again as Katelyn's eyes daggered him to the floor.
"What is your game Jay? You got us! You got your revenge. Your mother is still dead. What is any of this going to change the outcome of your life?" she asked plainly.
Jay cocked his gun and stepped closer to Katelyn.
"I already sent your friends back. It's you I wanted, and you fell right into my trap. So now, you will die for what you've done. Because Kate, it is true that I sent that man out to tell Flint about Blank Slate. I started this...and I'm going to finish it. I am the executioner."
