okay so so many people have already begun shipping violet with bill and stan, and it's odd to me because i literally never intended for her to have a love interest at all. idk if the story is giving off mixed vibes or if ppl just want to ship her with them, but i keep being like 😳. it's been a subject of personal debate over the course of writing this series, because i feel like vi could very easily have a relationship with any of the losers excluding richie and eddie,, but i also don't think she ever would.
the thing about her is that a lot of the things that she does can come off as romantic. she kisses them on the face, flops herself over them, hugs herself to their chest, sits on their laps—but never has it ever had any romantic intention (except for bev bc vi did have a crush on her at the beginning). and the losers know that too. when they first met her, richie, stan and bill each had a little crush on her bc she was a badass and one of the first girls who actually wanted to be their friend, but that faded over the first few months and i don't think any of them see her romantically anymore.
it's like, yeah, the most obvious possibly-romantic relationship she has is with stan, because they're both extremely close and very physically affectionate. but that's because i just see them as such good friends. like they love each other so fiercely and understand the other's vulnerabilities and weaknesses. like how violet understands and helps as much as possible with stan's ocd (can we just talk about how supportive of a friend violet is ok bc she literally tries her best to support & help them with their mental illnesses/disabilities like richie's adhd & eddie's hypochondria & bill's stutter :') ), and in return stan understands about her insecurities and her longing for physical affection (because her father gave her none). like he often hugs her and uses his hand to hold the back of her head and duck her face against his shoulder or chest, and that's just like their thing even when they're just thirteen that's just how they are.
they both value each other as equals and see each other as sibling-figures. those looking in from the outside might mistake them as dating, but they're not romantic in any manner. no matter how physically affectionate they get (her sitting on his lap at parties, sleeping in the same bed, their forehead kisses) it's never anything more than a platonic way. & that's bc violet's love language is touch and so she shows she loves people by being physically affectionate (same with richie).
and bill is the second one everyone wants her with bc she also loves him, but again it never comes across to me as romantic. i understand how it could come across that way to other readers? who haven't read it as far as i have and who don't understand all about violet's character yet, because yes she does sit in between his legs and read, and tell him she loves his stutter, but to me it's done in such a childish way that it could never be romantic. they just love each other so strongly, and they have so much in common — that being that they both feel responsible for all of the losers because they love their friends so unconditionally. violet's never been a leader, but she does feel like she needs to protect the others. and violet just looks up to him so much, and he just loves her so much like 🥺🥺
richie is obviously not going to be her love interest, bc violet and richie LITERALLY are like siblings. like, she lived in his house for a while after the big incident with her father in the past, and his parents are more family to her than her own, and she spends the most amount of time over there around his family (she spends more time with stan in general, but never with his parents around because they don't like her & she doesn't like them). like on some nights she'll go over for a tozier dinner and watch movies with maggie and wentworth etc bc they're actually good parents and they care about her. and richie definitely only loves her as a sister, and she's the same. they're a match made in hell, they're the chaotic best friend duo, but that's all they would ever be. they're all talk and fun and games when they're with each other, but in reality they understand each other so well and are always there to comfort the other. i can never ever see their relationship being anything romantic at all. plus she totally knows he has a crush on eddie.
(i headcanon eddie as gay so obvs they're only just best friends)
mike and ben are both people she literally adores so much (she loves them as much as she loves the og losers), and she's such a good friend to them, but i just can't see her being romantic with them either. like she and mike are the soft besties of the losers and come to think of it so are she and ben. like they're just such gentle, sweet friends and she just adores them so much that she could never love them romantically. (the only outlier in this i see is bev bc i imagine vi probably kissed her on the mouth at some parties or something when they're like 17 before they move away but it's never anything really more than crushes, y'know, & i don't think they're in love at allllll vi is just like oo bev is pretty)
i think the dilemma is that violet loves so unconditionally that it comes across as a romantic love. she describes her time growing up with the losers as like "falling in love" because in so many ways it is, but it's not falling in love with them romantically. it's falling in love with life and nature and herself, and those nights spent laying side-by-side watching the stars in the meadow, & always having them by her side, and having a second family; and falling in love with being a child and growing up with those you love so unconditionally around you and realising before you know it that you're not children anymore. and yes it's falling in love with them, but it's falling in love with them as best friends — making them your family.
and i also think that people assume a fanfiction needs to have a love interest, especially with a young female oc, but i love violet as just the unconditionally loving best friend who loves so strongly and so faithfully that it's a tragedy to her. it doesn't need to be a romantic love — it's just her clinging to the last kind of family she has left.
so all in all, despite how much i've debated it with myself and despite how much the readers and my friends want one of the losers to be her love interest, i just cannot see her dating any of them. her with stan to me is weird because they're just such good friends; violet and bill are exactly the same, she idolises him too much; richie and her would never happen bc they're just not like that; eddie is gay; mike and her are too soft and too much of gentle friends to ever be romantic; ben loves bev; and beverly loves ben. i love vi as a best friend, and she's so good at it.
