10: trust issues
[Errors might still be ahead]"My love, curiosity killed the cat."
Those words struck me like lightning.
It's been three days since his last visit and his words kept on ringing, hitting my head in replay, in slow motion, placing emphasis on the word "kill". It sounded like a warning and I hate it. With a sigh, I walked past the large shelves inside the casa Montreal's library. I was walking around the large isles of books until I found myself walking towards the deep part of the library. The room is as big as their ball room but it's a good thing that I'm good with directions.
A certain shelf took my attention. It was the oldest, by far. And it felt like it was calling me. Walking towards the said shelf, a book glimmered in the shady part of the shelves. Since I was as curious as a cat, I walked towards the glow. It was a book. With an old, violet hard-bound cover with a royally red, shimmery flower on it— the same shimmer as the feathered hat on gran's book. As I took the book, my earring tingled as another memory flashed:
It was gran-gran. She seemed like she was hiding away from someone. Looking to her left and right, making sure no one else can see her in the certain area of the shelves and she was holding a book—— the very same book that I had picked up. Although, she was keeping two of them. She took the red book woth her and left the one with the violet on the shelf completely concealed.
"They mustn't find the other book of wonder. I can't have them follow us to the other world. They mustn't." She whispered to herself. "Someone from my generation will find this and it will only glow in front of them." She immediately ran away towards the other isles, luring the men away from the book she had hidden.
I immediately took the book and went back into my room, I made sure that the doors were locked before I slumped down on my bed and hid inside my fort (I made one before I left for the library). The book, shimmered softly, as if sensing that someone might notice. I was about to read the book when someone knocked on my door.
I immediately hid it on the safest spot I know that exists in the room—— with me. If gran-gran didn't want anyone to find it, then I shall make sure no one ever will. I shrinked the book and put it inside the pocket of the gown. "Arielle?" I sighed, it was Lia. I am supposed to trust her, but I can't bring myself to. "Yes?" I answered, still inside the fort.
"Oh, you're having fun!" She squealed and removed her shoes, helping me "finish" the fort. I want to tell her about the memories I've been getting. But it seems like I can't bring myself to trust anyone. She immediately stripped her feet of the shoes she was wearing and went in the fort with me. "Anyways, how was your trip to the library?"
I looked at Lia. I want to tell them. But I can't bring myself to. I recalled something that gran had once told me when I was younger. In the world of wonder, never trust anyone fully only give them the trust they are due.
It didn't make sense before. But now it actually did. "By the way, young master Patricio is waiting for you in the library." Lia offered to continue fixing the fort so I went for the library. It was already dark outside but the lights from the fireflies and the glowing sun stones were illuminating the halls. The sun stones are like those solar-powered lights back home. Just stones.
When I entered the library, there was only a small spot illuminating some shelves amd pathways to the tables. Since no one liked to stay here at night, they didn't put much lights. I followed the trail, "Patricio? Is that you?" I called out. But all I hear is the rustling of the winds outside.
"Right here, my lady."
I followed his voice, leading me to one of the dark corners of the library far from the light. "Where are you, seriously? This isn't funny." His chuckle echoed from the whole room. "Come on! It's getting kinda creepy, Pat?" I called out again but instead of hearing an answer, I was pulled into one of the corners of the shelves as something warm and soft pressed against me.
It was awkward. Patricio, kissing me and I was too surprised to even react, so he pulled away, chuckling. "You're not to fond of the dark are you now, milady?" I slapped his arm playfully (although I made sure that he gets the idea that I hate being pulled by surprise. I hate the feeling of being ambushed). "That wasn't... ugh. I-I hate you!" I whined.
But when I met his eyes, I was sure something else glimmered in them. Something that I find menacing. Like a warning. "We both know we don't mean that, my love." he said, his tone now had changed. It was serious. The playfulness of his eyes now gone. And I felt my earring tingle, although this time, it gave a burning feeling that only I could feel.
