My hands shook as the phone rang on and on. I nearly hung up because of my nerves.
Then the ringing stopped and I felt nauseous. "Hello...?"
The voice was hesitant, probably more than mine. But when I heard it...my heart nearly skipped a beat.
"H-hey, Annabeth," I nearly choked as I pressed the phone against my face. "How are you doing?"
We'd broken up two weeks ago and hadn't spoken since. Although I was sure that she'd seen the news of me and a, quote, 'free spirited red head' were now seen together.
The only reason they called her 'free spirited' was they couldn't call her rude, which she certainly was. She had nearly stolen a camera out of a paparazzi's hands.
I'd been avoiding any Annabeth related news in hopes to forget about her or maybe I was afraid to see she was with someone else, but even that didn't make sense since I was the one seeing someone else.
God, she must hate me.
"I'm okay," Annabeth replied, her voice shaky as she spoke through the sentence. It sounded like she was as nervous as I was. "How about you?"
I sighed as I stood up and walked out of my bedroom and into my living room. I stared at the piano bitterly. It felt like days ago that we sat there together, in love. "My new album is releasing soon. So, that's cool I guess."
"I heard. I was going to call you, but, uh," she said, her voice trailing off. "Anyways, that's amazing. I hope it's successful."
"Yeah, me too," I responded. "Hey, would you wanna come to the release party?"
I am so stupid. Of course she wouldn't. Not after I stomped all over her heart.
"Sure!" she said enthusiastically. Then her voice went back to normal. "I mean, yes, to support a...friend."
I nearly laughed out loud. A friend. I didn't know what I was to Annabeth, but certainly not a friend. Not an enemy, nor a partner. I was...neutral. Although I was certain that she hated me for what I did. I would hate myself, too, so I couldn't blame her.
I tousled a hand through my hair as I forced myself to look away from the piano. "Great, I'll text you the details, okay? And don't worry, it'll be super packed so I probably won't see you."
"Oh, well, in that case could I bring a plus one to not be lonely?" Annabeth asked.
"Okay," I responded, although I couldn't help but wonder who'd she bring. "Just don't bring Thalia....that woman still scares me."
Annabeth laughed. "I won't. See you then?"
"See you then."
