The only correct way to read this title is to shout "THEEEEEEEEEIIIIIIIIIIIFF!!!" at the top of your lungs. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.
It was a tough day at work for Gerard. Well "tough" may have been a bit of an understatement. He constantly had to deal with people yelling "your food prices are too high!" Or "your food isn't non-GMO!" When in reality, he had no control over any of that. He usually just told them to talk to the manager about it in an email.
Most of the time, it didn't work.
But, he had to try something. And of course he could always count on his co-worker, Frank, to put the fires out for him. He was sweet and charming and always put up with Gerards ranting. They were good friends, to say the least, and always looked out for each other.
Today especially, it felt like Frank was watching out for Gerard a bit more than usual. It was probably due to the fact that he hadn't had very much coffee. So by the end of the day, he was groggy and tired and couldn't focus on anything in particular. Frank had gone out earlier, wishing him good luck with the rest of his shift.
When the end of his shift finally came, Gerard was so happy to be going home he practically ran to his car. But when he got in the front seat, he saw that he had left his keys inside. Strange he thought, but otherwise paid no attention to the detail. He began to drive back to his apartment before he realised that other things were out of place.
There were empty chip bags all over the floor, some shirts in the passengers seat. And when he looked in the rearview mirror, he saw a small dog sitting on top of what looked like... A person sleeping? The scruffy dog gave a small bark, which was apparently enough to wake whoever was in his car up.
Gerard felt frozen in place as the stranger lifted the dog off of them and sat up, rubbing their eyes. But when he removed his hands from his face, Gerard immediately recognised who it was "Frank?". Frank jumped in surprise at the sound of his voice "Frank, what are you doing in my car? Why is there a dog here?"
"Gerard, what are you talking about? This is my car." Frank curled his knees up to his chin in a vulnerable position. Well, that explained why Gerard felt so different sitting in this one.
"I'm so sorry, we must have the same car or something. I can take you home if you want?" Although Gerard didn't know how he would get back to his own car.
Frank distracted himself by picking up the dog and putting it in his lap as he tried to change the subject "It's fine, really. Besides, you would have to walk back to the parking lot and... Really, it's fine."
Gerard looked at him in the rearview again as he pulled over "Frank, why are you acting so suspicious? What is there for you to hide?" At this point, he had turned fully around and was staring at Frank who was still holding the dog and looking awfully nervous. He didn't wanna say it, it was too embarrassing "Frank, I know you well enough that hiding things isn't like you. Just tell me?"
He breathed out a sigh of defeat and looked down "I've kind of been living in my car for... God, it feels like just yesterday. But I guess in reality it's maybe been.... A month? I can't really remember at this point. The days kind of just fade and mold into each other, so it's not like it matters. It's just that rent is hard to pay when you're a college dropout who works at a shitty supermarket for your day job." Frank chuckled, despite feeling like shit "I guess I was just worried that you were gonna think less of me if I told you, so I just... Didn't." When he was done, Frank looked up to see Gerard staring at him blankly "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that, I-"
"You can stay with me." Gerard cuts him off, turning back around and starting the car again.
"No no no, you don't have to do that, Gerard." Frank insisted. It was already embarrassing enough that he had to admit he was living in his car, he didn't need anyone to babysit him. He was an adult, goddamnit, he should be able to survive on his own.
"Oh, c'mon Frank. It's no trouble at all. I live alone, it'll be nice to have company. And besides," Gerard says, looking again through the rearview "I did kind of steal your car, which is technically your home. I think I should at least make it up to you for this... Inconvenience."
Lmao I didn't know how to end this and I wanted to get it out as soon as possible so you guys at least have something. But, hey, I'm not dead! Yay!
Anyway bye. Enjoy. New chapters coming soon 👀
