I teleport to Death's Door. Knocking three times fast, I step back and wait for an answer. Let's hope Gabriel hasn't annoyed them so much that they don't want to speak to me. Within seconds the door swings open and a tired looking person stands in its place. They squint their eyes, as if evaluating whether or not they should let me in.
"Hello, I'm Lucifer. You must be Death? I'm sorry to bother you but I was hoping we could talk."
They move aside to let me in, not giving me so much as a word. I don't feel entirely welcome, but I haven't been thrown out yet. Walking stepping forward I take in my surroundings. Everything is very dark. It's almost like walking into a pitch black room of emptiness. Cold runs through me.
"Lucifer, I've met you before, you know. You probably don't remember, as it was long ago. What would you like? I presume it's what your brother and his partner were after?"
I sit down, or at least I think I do, on a surface which I'm guessing is a couch. It's hard to tell in the darkness.
"The Reaper Bean. I know how you feel about Gabriel, so you probably won't want to help seeing as we're trying to bring someone back, but please?" I'm not sure the please will get me anywhere, but I'm hopeful.
Death sits down in front of me and shakes their head. "Bringing people back isn't as easy as you think. There's an order to things, a cycle. You live, and you die."
"But what about us?" I try to reason, "We don't die. You expect me to say goodbye to the one I love forever? When I have power like this? When I know power like this?"
Death only stares blankly, blinking like a cat. Maybe I should have lied and gotten the bean that way. Brokered a deal or just distracted them while I figured out where they're hiding the bean. Shoulda, coulda, woulda. Now I have to hope that Death will have pity on me. My odds aren't great.
"He cannot come back without consequence. And us? We are not Human, not Vampire, not Werewolf, nor Witch. We have been here since Time began, and will be here long after.
"Celestial beings are very different—less expirable—than mortals. You will learn that after loving one." Death stares fondly beside me.
When I turn to look, I find nothing. Perhaps they're remembering something. Someone. I can work with that.
"You don't wish you could bring them back?" My head tilts at Death.
They look taken aback. "No. No, I don't. Though I suppose that's because I know their life was a grand gesture of love from the Universe, and therefore bringing them back would be a betrayal."
"That's not fair or true. If you loved them, wouldn't you do anything in your power to bring them back to you?"
Death stares hard, in a glare of sorts. It's less aggressive with their tired expression.
"You know nothing of our love, Lucifer. Do not speak as if you do. That was one of God's mistakes, He made you too Human. And that is why you do not—will not—understand."
Well I'm clearly not getting anywhere like this. I tried the pity card, the empathy card, but nothing is working. Maybe Tara's faith in me was ill placed. She would've had an easier time getting this damn bean. Right, remember what it is you're here for. The Reaper Bean. To bring back Niklaus.
I breath in deep, exhaling slowly.
"That is exactly why I do understand, Death. You see, being human-like has made me understand life more than any Angel or Celestial Being ever could. In life there are moments that you need to hold onto when the bad ones are storming through, when the clouds darken and there is no light in sight.
