A blinding ray of sunlight poured through my window, covering my room in a sparkly golden glitter. Yes, it looked pretty and all that but it was way too early! I let out a groan, sounding similar to a walrus giving birth to a hippo. I don't even know where that come from oh my god. Well it is quite an accurate description, if I'm honest. A knock on the door startled me, and in came my morning maid, carrying breakfast on a gold tinted tray. I am joking. It's this thing called sarcasm. I use it quite often really. No, I don't have a maid and the closest thing to it was my dad shouting from the kitchen 'Get up potato, breakfast is ready!' The usual wake up call from my ever so charming dad. Yes, even my own father thinks I look like a potato, I guess you share that in common. Well here you go, your very own 'Day in the Life of a Walking Potato.' Okay, I will shut up about potatoes now. I dragged myself out of bed, not even daring to look in the mirror, and out of my room. In our flat, I had the biggest room. I protested, saying that Dad should have it, after all he was caring for two girls as a single father, but he refused. It was decorated the exact way an eleven year old would consider heaven; purple walls with chimes and flowers, a chandelier and a princess mosquito net thingy. You know what I mean. Breakfast was on the table, three crumpets on plates we designed ourselves on a holiday trip to Cornwall, at a P-I-Y (paint it yourself) shop. I grabbed the plate, took it to my room and set it on my desk, slowly taking bites every now and then.
I get it, no one cares about how I eat crumpets, I am moving on now. Well today is just my average day in school. There's only a few weeks left and even though we will all be gone and moving on with our lives in under a month, we're under more pressure than ever. I grabbed my bag, shoved in some money for lunch and headed out the door, down the stairs and out of the block. Lilian lived on the other side of the road, and her house was probably at least the size of my whole block of flats. Enourmous. I waved goodbye to my little sister, her little pixie face pressed against her bedroom window. She was adorable, my little sister. Well, half-sister. Basically, to cut a long story short it took my dad a while to get used to life without my mum, and he turned into a bit of a.. well - man whore. He had one night stands all the time and ended up with my sister, her mother turned up at our door, handed dad a nine month old Scarlett with an envolope containing her birth certificate, and a check for 5 thousand pounds. With that, she disappeared and that was the last we saw of her.
"Hey ugly!" Lil bounced up next to me, her long blond hair plaited down her left shoulder. We started walking, school was only a two minute walk around the corner, for most people. Lil and I could win an award for being the slowest walkers of all time. It takes us 15 minutes to get there, and even longer to get back. When we eventually arrived, the bell went for form straight away and we head up the four huge sets of stairs to our form room. Trust us, the laziest and unfittest girls I know to get the room at the top of the block. Both panting, we opened the door and sat in a corner. "Hey Summer, forgotten your life again at all recently?" Someone over the other side jeered. I just ignored it, since the accident, people found it funny to take the piss out of what happened, it used to get to me but I just block them out now. "I'm so glad you're mum died of cancer Summer!" Another one smirked. I just sat there, I could handle it but Lil couldn't. "You're all pathetic, leave Summer alone. It wasn't her fault that her boyfriend-"
"Lilian please!" I yelled, tears in my eyes. I didn't even know the story, in fact she was the only one who knew every last detail. She sat down next to me and whispered "Sorry." I just nodded. The boys who were no longer laughing just stood staring. I'd had enough. I grabbed my bag and walked out of the room, down the stairs and sat on a bench around the corner.
"I'm so sorry Summer, I wasn't going to tell them, they needed a kick in the teeth and it just blurted out." Lilian took a seat next to me. "Tell me what happened. Please." I cried, avoiding eye contact. "I can't Summer, you know I just can't." She sighed, glancing at me but looking away.
Yes, I cried. Yes, potatoes have feelings. Sorry, I forgot. Lil took me home, called up the school and said there had been a mishap. The school knew a bit, well it would be a bit odd for them if I'd turned up not knowing a thing, so they said okay and to let them know what was going on later. Dad had gone to work and Scarlett was at school now, so we sat on the sofa with a pot of ice cream and two spoons, watching The Notebook and finishing course work. "Lil?" I said eventually. "Mmm?" She replied. I hesitated for a second, unsure. "Will I ever get to know why?" I spoke quietly. She stared at me, eyes full of pitty and guilt. "I just don't know Summer, only he can tell you." She gasped. "Who, my dad?" I answered, desperate to know more. "Yeah.. your dad." She said, agreeing. And that was the end of that conversation.
Lil left soon after and I got out ingredients to make a surprise dinner for dad and Scarlett. I needed to know, it was my life, my story so what was so awful that I couldn't know?
