A/N: Quick note, there's a possible Trigger Warning (S****de)

----------------------------------------------------------------

I stood before the door to my childhood home.

I swallowed.

I slowly reached out, hand shaking.

Knock, knock!

No answer.

The door slowly opened on its own, creaking.

I looked over my shoulder, meeting dark eyes.

I let out a long breath.

You can do this, _.

I reached out once more, pushing the door open.

Reader: Hello? Is anyone home?

I reached the small kitchen, yellow tiles stained from years of use.

I walked down the hallway, each step shaky and unsure.

But with Ivan by my side what did I have to fear?

I eventually reached the final door, seeming narrower than I remembered.

I opened the door to reveal my father standing in the middle of the room, black belt in his hand.

Father: _!

He gasped.

His eyes turned hard as stone as they fell upon Ivan.

Ivan: Did you really think I'd let my sunflower come back here alone?

He ignored him, turning to me.

Father: I was so worried when you disappeared from the ball that night.

I clenched my fist, hoping to stop the shaking.

Father: All that matters is you're back home now.

He smiled but all I felt was disgust.

Reader: I'm not here to stay.

Father: What are you saying? Are you choosing those monsters over your own flesh and blood?

Reader: The only monster I see is you.

His eyes narrowed, sending a chill down my spine.

His hand clenched around the belt.

Father: I see. They've been filling your head with utter nonsense!

Father: You were never this outright disobedient before.

Reader: That's not quite true, is it?

My eyes flitted from the belt in his hands to his face.

I stood taller, a realization falling over me.

I'm not scared anymore.

Father: You...you were nothing but a disappointment to me.

Father: I did my best to protect you from those bloodsucking monsters and yet you choose them over me! Ha!

Father: I was only following the wishes of your poor mother.

Reader: Mother? I-she died during childbirth.

He shook his head.

Father: No, I only wanted to protect you from the truth. Years ago...your mother was abducted.

Father: By a powerful vampire.

My mouth went dry.

What is he saying?

Father: Luckily she returned without harm. But...she was never the same since.

Father: After you were born she was ecstatic you were a healthy, human baby. After she knew you were healthy, that you were safe, she-

His voice cracked, tears threatening to pool in his eyes.

Father: She took her own life.

...

....

Reader: What?

Reader: No, that can't be.

Father: Don't you see? I had to protect you from those beasts; I had failed to protect her. If only you would listen to me! Can't you see I'm doing everything to protect you?

To protect me?

You beat me, you made welts rise on my skin!

How is that protecting me?

Besides, I ended up in their hands anyway...

Reader: I-I don't believe you! I can't believe you!

His face went blank before souring.

Father: So you won't listen, huh?

He took a step closer, belt held firmly in his hand.

I watched in terror as he raised his arm.

SLAP!

I looked back in bewilderment, Ivan rigid as the belt met his back.

Reader: Why...why are you protecting me?

SLAP!

Again and again.

Tears pooled in my eyes as Ivan smiled with each hit, his strong arms wrapped around me.

My tears stained his shirt, chest pressed against me.

No.

No, this isn't fair!

I can't do anything to protect him, to save him!

Ivan: I couldn't protect you then...so please, let me do this now.

He whispered in my ear.

Reader: Ivan...!

No, I can't let this happen.

I must do something!

I felt the heat from anger build within my body, pooling in my stomach until it became nearly too hot to stand.

I screamed.

Brilliant lights shot out, illuminating the room in an array of colors.

Everything went white, sound muffled.

When things came back into focus both men were lying on the floor.

Reader: Ivan!

I rushed to his side, kneeling.

I put a hand on his chest, relieved as it rose and fell.

Ivan: ...amazing.

His shocked expression soon bloomed into a grin.

I smiled in relief, hugging him close to my chest.

He sat up, slowly turning his head towards my father.

He was still.

I slowly stepped closer, revealing burn holes through his clothes, singeing his skin.

Reader: Is he..?

Ivan: He won't ever bother you again.

Reader: Hah...

I faltered, tear slipping from my eye.

I was slightly sad, but more than that, I felt immeasurable relief.

Ivan: Let's go home, okay sunflower?
