''I think you need to cool off a little,'' said Michael after I told him about the wedding invitation. ''I can take Ashton with me for the day, we'll go in a park or something and I'll buy him ice cream while you stay here, or not, and relax.''
''I don't need some time off, Mikey. I can take care of Ashton by myself.''
''No. You need to calm down and talk to your mother. If she sent you this invitation to her wedding, she wants you to be there. It's been a long time since you and her last talked, she misses you, Luke.''
I snort. ''She doesn't. She hates me.''
''That's what you think.''
Minutes alter, Ashton came down the stairs, shoes in hands and fully clothed. His tee shirt seemed backward and pants unbuttoned but he had a big smile on his face as he walked in my direction, aiming for a hug.
''Why are you not coming with Mikey and me?'' he asked with pouty lips as I tried to quickly button his pants for him, knowing they'll fall down if they not buttoned and that the boy's not able to yet.
''I have things to do. Mikey will take you to the park and you'll have fun.''
''Not fun when you're not there, Lukey. Will miss you.'' He nuzzled his face in my chest, wrapping his smaller arms around my middle, clinging to me.
''I'll see you later. We'll watch a movie or do whatever you want tonight, okay?'' I suggested, making up for the time we'll be apart.
He nodded as I hugged him back. I kissed the top of his head and shooed him to Michael, warning him to keep a close eye on him and that I'd kill him if he doesn't bring him back at the end of the day. He rolled his eyes at me and said something about me being dramatic and other bullshit I chose to ignore.
When I arrived to the Clifford's house, Michael's father opened the door and let me in, saying my mother would be there shortly. He was surprised to see me but didn't comment on it. I sat on the patio since it was a sunny day, waiting for her.
''Why did you invite me to your wedding?'' I asked when I saw her, not letting time for her to close the sliding door. I didn't came her to chat about life, I want answers. And knowing my mother, if I don't go straight with the questions, she'll avoid them and will change subject constantly.
''Nice to see you too, Honey. It's a beautiful day, why don't we go for a walk and talk?''
I shook my head. ''No. I didn't come here to have a good time with you. I'm sorry if it's what you wanted but it wasn't my intention.''
She nodded and sat down, smoothing the hem of her dress. ''Want a drink?'' I declined.
''Why did you invite me to your wedding?'' I repeated.
''Aren't weddings an event to celebrate with all your family and loved ones?''
''Usually.''
''There, you have your answer. I am really feeling this wedding, Luke. I'd like for my son to be present. Also, it's not like you can reproach anything to my soon-to-be husband as he is your best friend's father,'' she chuckled.
''You and I haven't talked in years. Why this sudden change? Having remorse of disowning your only son?''
''People do errors. Not having you in my life these past years was an error. I regret asking you to leave-''
''You didn't asked me to, you forced me! No needs to change the words, we both know how it happened.''
''You were becoming like your father. I-I couldn't let this happen. I couldn't let you become like this sick man.''
