Chapter 3- No More Vacation.

For the past two weeks, everything has either been eerily quiet or abnormally normal. Everything's on routine except for the fact that Xander, as he wanted me to call him, sleeps 4 rooms down the hall from mine.

So after our unfortunate meeting, I marched straight to my office and called my grandfather.

"Oh, Sophia! What a pleasant surprise!" He said as he answered the call. I frowned.

It's never like him to greet me with such warmth, not even around friends, why was he acting?
We were never close, especially not after my mom left. We often fight. So why is he so happy to hear from me?

"Grandfather," I greeted formally, "I've met Mr. Charleston, care to explain what this is and why haven't you informed me?" I heard him sigh.

"Xander is such a pleasant boy, isn't he? He'll be staying at our home so treat him nicely. Just let him help in the academy.I'll talk to you later." He ended the call.

Our home? Psh. This is as much of a home to him as the mall. It irked me that he'd think I'd just go with the flow.

That two weeks ago though, yet his last words still echo in my head.

I'll talk to you later. Those four words used to give me so much hope. Until I realized that 'later' actually went from the span of thirty minutes to thirty years.

Yet here I am, feeling like a child waiting for her mom to come home with her favorite treat.

I shake my head, refusing to think about it. Refusing to let myself wait for 'later'.

Unconciously, my thoughts drift to Xander.

After our first encounter, he seemed to avoid me. I really don't know why though. He seems to be mad at me about something I don't know about and I just don't have the time nor energy to think.

We've actually barely seen each other, apart from the occasional meeting in the hallways, trainings at school, and breakfast - something I'm sure a good host, such as my grandfather, would be ashamed of doing-  because I've been too busy finishing everything at the academy and he's been too busy trying to avoid me. In my defense, he only did tell me to make sure Xander gets settled in- which I did-  and trained-which I also did-so they can't actually hold this against me.

I only give him two-three hours worth of paperworks so to get the 'training' covered and send him on his way. It's not because I don't want him to learn or anything, it's just that I want to finish up everything by the end of this week, so I could at least get a week long vacation-something I deserve. And giving him jobs other than paperwork will only slow me down. Not that he has anything to complain about though.

"You're overdoing it again." Cadence commented as she set a plate of eggs, bacon and toast in front of me. I dug in instantly.

She's right though, I've been rushing everything so much that I've been managing to stay at the Academy with Shammey till midnight, at the least, for the past two weeks.

"This is the last day." I informed her." I don't need to do much anymore. Just a few paperworks. Then tomorrow I'm off to St. Dominic's for the rest of the wee-" our conversation was halted when a new voice joined in.

"Good morning." He greeted with hi husky voice.

I was about to put food in my mouth, so when he spoke, I dropped my fork, together with the last piece of my bacon on the floor.

That was the last bite, I sighed and looked longingly. They were always the best.

"Five second rule!" He said excitedly and dived to get my bacon before lifting it up to his lips and eating.

I frown.

"Good Morning." Xander greeted again, as he sat down next to me. This time, it seemed more serious. I only nodded. Still sad about my bacon.

"So, what's in St. Dominic's?" He asked. A change in his mood, evident.

I don't understand this guy. Yesterday he was hell-bent on avoiding me and now, he's curious as to what I do.

"Just something." I said. He looked at me weirdly.

"I need to go to the academy, are you coming with me?" I asked. He shook his head.

"I'll just come by later." He answered.

By three in the afternoon, it was safe to say that I was wiped. I've actually been sporting this huge headache since I woke up this morning. And right now, there's nothing I'd want more than to lie down on my bed.

Too bad, I can't do that. Mounds of paperworks still need to be done, stuff that has only been submitted by the other departments of the school admin.

At this rate, I won't be able to finish today. Maybe I can postpone St. Domi-

*knock*
*knock*

My thoughts were yet again interrupted by the soft knocks on my door. And without waiting for permission, Xander entered.

Leave it to him to always interu-

"Hey, I was just won- woah." He said as he saw the state of my office.

"You need something?" I urged, not wanting to discuss how my office looked like.

"Ye-no, uhmm, well.. Do.."He blubbered. "You need my help?" He asked. The last part seemed to be directed more at him than me.

I was surprised, both by the question and by the fact that I want to say yes. I didn't though, I stayed quiet

"You need my help." This time, he wasn't asking.

"You also need a break." He stated again, I just sighed.

He was right though, I needed both his help and a break. So I stood up, " Yes, I do." I said with a small smile. He seemed to have frozen. I stood up to get my key from my bag and started walking, I was headed towards the door only to be to stop, "Are you okay?." I asked with a frown.

"Y-yeah." He answered stepping back so I could get out.

"Were'd you go?" I asked, almost laughing. He didn't get to answer though. Our attentions were diverted to the commotion outside Shamara's door.

"N-no, please! I need to talk to Sky!" I hears a guy say. I headed towards the door but Xander stopped me.

"Let me go first." He said and I nodded.
