Gally removed the lid to the pot hole in the ground and set it beside it. He then pulled out the metal ladder and set it down inside. It must've gone in deep, because it took a little while for Gally to put the ladder down until his hands were at the top of it.
"Be careful, hermano," Jorge said to Thomas.
Gally sat down so he could climb down the ladder first when Frypan stopped him by talking.
"Gally," he said, "take care of these three."
He nodded and proceeded to climb down. Meanwhile, I turned my gaze toward Newt, who was sitting down, fixing his boot. Suddenly, his right arm started twitching. He wiggled his fingers, raising it up a bit. He clenched his hand into a fist a couple of times, looking like he's examining it. That made me concerned like before. What is he doing? I decided to confront him about it.
"Hey," I said.
When he saw me, he put his arm down like nothing had happened.
"Hi," he replied, smiling at me.
"You okay?"
"Oh, yeah, I'm fine." Newt glanced up at the ceiling, trying to rephrase his sentence. "Well, I mean, besides going into the city, thinking about our chances of us not getting caught."
I simply nodded. Though what he did made me suspicious, I once again dropped the situation, deciding to talk to him about it later. At least until we get back. He stood up, and I had to scan his amazing outfit for a second. He wore dark grey pants, the same white shirt and a deep red jacket over it. I couldn't help but smile at how attractive he looked, especially with his messy blond hair.
"You look handsome," I complimented while brushing his shoulders with my hands.
"What, you didn't like me in my other jacket?" Newt asked teasingly while adjusting his sleeves.
"No, you still looked sexy in that one, too," I said and gently grabbed the opening of his jacket with my hands, pulling him to my chest. "I just think that red is more your color."
Newt smiled down at me and leaned in for a kiss. I quickly filled the gap, feeling the same heat come back. Even though it was short, it felt like an eternity before we pulled apart. We went to join Thomas and Gally shortly after. Newt helped me down once I was inside the sewer, telling me to watch my step. We turned on our flashlights and headed down the nasty smelling sewer. The stench was so bad that I coughed a couple of times and covered my nose with my sleeve. I heard Newt let out a disgusted noise.
"This is gross," he commented.
I laughed a little by the way he said it.
"I can agree," I replied.
"Yeah, this is great," Thomas said sarcastically.
Gally went to the side where some electric boxes are mounted on the walls and started toying with them. After a few flips from the switches, the sound of something like a generator started up and lights lit up the tunnel, making it easier to see. We continued to walk, hearing what sounded like a subway train passing over us.
We didn't walk for very long until Gally opened a door up ahead ajar, poking his head out to see if anyone was around. Or, that's what I thought he was doing. When the coast was clear, we walked into the crowded street of people walking by, too busy to notice us coming out of the blue. I noticed they had surgical masks around their necks, so I thought that we were supposed to be wearing one, too. But like I said, they were too busy to notice.
We stayed together, hoping that we wouldn't separate from each other. We were in the subway, so we followed Gally up the steps to get away from the crowded space. When we reached the top, Thomas, Newt and I widened our eyes in amazement, looking at the beautiful city lit up in electric colored lights. It looked breathtaking at night; I wish we had something like this back at The Right Arm.
"This is a long way from the Glade," Newt commented, still staring at the buildings in wonder.
A woman's voice suddenly cut on an intercom, announcing fifteen minutes before curfew. Funny how they have one for protection even though they are surrounded by walls.
"We better get off the streets," Gally suggested. "I know it's hard, but act like you've seen it before."
Thomas, Newt and I exchanged glances before we once again followed Gally down a different flight of stairs. It felt so mysterious walking in the streets of an abnormally large city at night, and even though I don't remember, I missed something like this. It was like some sort of nostalgia I've felt before, something familiar.
We snuck around when a few ambulances and patrol cars passed by in the empty streets. Now we really had to be careful and not blow our cover.
"Well, they've upped security," Gally said and leaned forward to look at all three of us. "I'm guessing you shanks have something to do with that."
I made a face at him. Oh, how I've missed the words we used to say all the time back in the Glade.
"Let's get out of here."
Gally looked around the corner one last time before we made a break for it. We ran until we were met to the wall standing hundreds of feet high. Newt went first as Gally gave him a boost. Thomas was still distant with Gally, so he said he got it and jumped up to reach the ladder. I was quite the opposite and accepted Gally's help. He boosted me up quickly, probably because I was light as a feather.
After everyone was up, we shuffled down the small edge to get to the stairs inside the wall. I was a little scared because there was no protection whatsoever. Plus, it was so narrow that we had to be in a line as we jogged lightly. Thankfully, none of us slipped and we made it inside. We jogged up the stairs and we were finally able to get a full view of The Last City. In the center, there was a building that was the tallest and brightest. W.I.C.K.E.D. tower.
"There it is," Gally pointed to the largest building with multiple floors lit up the brightest. "W.I.C.K.E.D.'s got Minho, that's where they're keeping him."
There were some duffle bags that were already there previously by our feet, filled with useful items. Gally pulled out a telescope I've never seen before and adjusted it on the railing.
"Lawrence has been trying to find a way in for years," he explained. "Place has been crawling with soldiers. They've got surveillance everywhere. There's scanners on every floor."
All four of us leaned on the railing with our hands folded, thinking of several ways to get into the building. I stared at the tall building, scanning each floor, hoping that Minho would be on one of them. I wish I could see him. I wanted to see him now. Just think though that this will all be worth it for him.
"Sounds like a bloody fortress," Newt commented after a few seconds of silence.
"Yeah, I thought you said you had a way in," Thomas said and turned his head to Gally.
"I might," Gally reminded.
"You might?" Thomas recited. "The hell do you mean, might?"
Gally looked at him, then stepped away from the telescope.
"Take a look," he offered.
Thomas did and put his eye to the opening. He stared into it for a couple of seconds before he pulled away, having a different expression this time. I knitted my eyebrows together. What did he see?
"I said I had a way in, I didn't say you were gonna like it."
