"Rosie!" Mum cried, hugging me. Dad and I had finally found the right ward, where Freddie was in a coma in a separate room. The doctors were desperately trying to wake him up, with no success. I started crying into mum's shoulder. Freddie wasn't like any normal 6 year old brother. He wasn't annoying, nose-picking or violent. He was shy, sweet and quiet. Dad told me what happened whilst we were driving here. Mum was walking him back from school when he dropped his recycling model (that he had made in school today) in the middle of the road. Whilst they were crossing. He let go of mum's hand and ran back into the road to pick it up, being hit by a speeding car. And there was little chance of him surviving. We stayed outside his room for the rest of the evening. I decided to call Amy. She was the closest person to me, besides family.
"Hey, Amy," I whispered.
"Sup hun?" I told her everything.
"Oh my Alfie Deyes! Right, I'm coming straight away!"
"What? But it's 8 in the evening!"
"I don't care, I've known you for several years and Freddie has been like a little brother to me." She was right.
"Okay, as long as your parents are okay with it. As soon as you get here my mum will look after you."
"Sure. See you soon." About twenty minutes later she came running up the corridor and pulled me into a hug. Mum turned round from peering through the window into where Freddie was still unconscious. We weren't allowed to visit him yet as they were still trying to wake him up.
"Hello Jessica," Amy smiled. Mum weakly smiled back. A middle aged doctor with a clipboard came out to us and closed the door behind him.
"So far, Freddie hasn't made any progress. We are trying all we can to help."
"Well you're clearly not trying enough, are you!" Mum yelled. Dad pulled her back and she started crying into his shoulder.
"I'm sorry, Mrs Banks. We'll have to expect the worst, and hope for the best."
"Can we see him yet?" I asked.
"Well, we would still like to try out a few more things. But maybe tomorrow, yes," he said, walking back in to the room.
"There's a 24 hour cafeteria just down the corridor. Would you girls like to go and get some dinner?" Mum mumbled, wiping her eyes and pulling a ten pound note out of her purse.
"Yeah, okay. Do you want anything?" I asked. She shook her head. We walked down the never-ending hall, and came to a set of double doors. Grabbing a tray at the entrance, we queued, and when it was our turn both asked for fish and chips. I also placed two bottles of water on the tray and we payed at the till. The cafeteria was quite busy considering it was gone 8pm in the evening, but we managed to find an empty table with two seats. My chips tasted like plastic and the fish was rock solid, but I was so hungry that it was gone in a few minutes. When we had both cleared out plates we picked up the half-empty bottles of water and walked back to Freddie's room. Mum and dad were sitting on the hard seats just outside. Mum looked awful- her mascara running, her hair messy and out of place, her nails bitten down considerably where she had nervously chewed them. Dad looked almost completely normal, still in his work clothes, but he had a blotchy face and tousled hair as well. Amy and I sat across from them. I pulled out my phone and started playing Crossy Road. Amy watched over my shoulder. It was the one thing that could keep my mind off what was happening.
