Freddie had been in the Hospital for over a month now, and wasn't improving at all. I was now staying at home most of the time, and mum would be there every day except from 4pm-8am where she would be looking after me, and at the weekends when she only visited on Saturdays. Nan, Grandma and Grandpa visited on Sundays. Life just wasn't the same though. My parents were constantly looking worried, but trying to be brave for me. School continued like usual, and our exams started in exactly two weeks.
"Any news?" I asked mum, entering the hallway after an ordinary school day.
"Nope, no improvement."
"Okay. Well I'm off to revise." As soon as I entered my room I got changed into my "lol ur not a magcon boy" tshirt and leggings. I then chose a song, plugged in my headphones and pulled out my maths books. I found it easier to listen to classical music whilst revising; it was quite calming. At least it wasn't One Direction, where I would be screaming the lyrics at the top of my lungs and not getting any work done! After two and a half hours of solid revision (I know, I must have a boring life revising all the time as one of my "classmates" said, but if it helps me pass an exam I don't care) mum called me for dinner.
"So Rosie, I was thinking...if Freddie woke up soon, it would be nice for him to have something new to come home to...and you know he has always wanted a dog..."
"We're getting a dog?" I smiled.
"Yes...your dad and I have already talked it all through. We need you to help us pick a breed though. Keep it in mind that it can't be anything to big; our garden's quite small."
"Okay, how about...ooh, I know! A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel! They are so adorable, with they long ears and cute snouts!"
"I guess that would be okay...we'll talk to your dad when we meet him at the Hospital later."
----------------------------------------------
So it was decided, we were getting a Spaniel!
"Hey Fred, not sure if you can hear me but we have great news!" I grinned, sitting in the chair next to Freddie's limp body.
"We are getting...a dog! And it's mostly going to be yours, but of course we'll help you if you need it! We are getting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, but we're not sure whether to get a girl or boy!" I exclaimed. It was probably useless because Freddie might not have been able to hear me, but I wanted to say it anyway. I stared at his pale face. Everything lay so still and quiet, except for the tiny breaths coming out of his nose, and a few words he murmured from his tiny mouth. Wait, WHAT? I glanced over at mum and dad who were standing by the door. They were watching in just as much shock as I was.
"What was that, Freddie?" Mum asked, a relieved tear escaping from her eye.
"I want a...boy," he gasped, his eyelids fluttering open.
"Freddie! You're awake!" Dad yelled, rushing over to him with mum following and collapsing on the bed, sobbing.
"How...how did you do that?" I grinned.
"What?"
"You woke up, just like that!"
"Well...I really wanted a boy dog, so I pushed and pushed until the words came out of my mouth. I've been awake every time you visited, being able to hear what was going on but not being able to move. It's so annoying," He muttered. I could tell he was really tired. Dad rushed out of the room to get the doctor, returning seconds later.
"Congratulations, Mr and Mrs Banks. There is good and bad news. The good news is that will need to run a few tests and check everything, but hopefully Freddie can go home in a few hours. The bad news is that his leg is still broken and will need to remain in a cast for another month. He will need to use crutches in order to walk properly."
"That's fine, as long as my baby boy comes home," mum cried, hugging Freddie. He weakly wrapped his arms around her neck. The tests all had positive results, and soon we all drove home. It was Wednesday so it was decided that Freddie would stay at home and rest, and then return to school on Monday. As soon as we arrived home I ran upstairs and called Amy, telling her everything. She seemed so excited, and was coming round tomorrow after school to visit Freddie. I then called Jamie, who was also really pleased, and we chatted for a bit before mum told me I should go to sleep. Well, who could blame her, it was 11:45pm. Soon everyone was asleep, happy and relieved that our family was complete once again.
