Toni.
"Come Monday morning,
You see her waitin'
On the street for her ride.
In an hour she'll be working
In a tower made of steel in the sky."
-Cher When all eyes are on me, I feel my mouth drying up and my hands start to sweat. My knees shake and I try to keep myself from biting the pen on my hand. Meetings at the office have become a routine, but today the conference room feels colder, and one could cut the tension with a knife in here.
I'm probably getting fired. They enjoyed having here as an intern for a year, but I know they won't make me a permanent employee to the company. Why don't they get on with it already? This is too nerve-wracking.
"I guess you're wondering why we called this meeting, right Miss Scott?" No other than Simon Sproule speaks up. I have only seen him a couple of times before. He is the Chief of Communications at Aston Martin, he's an extremely busy man.
"Well," I start, but quickly have to clear my throat to continue, "next week will be a year since I started my internship here." Speak up, Antonia. Be confident. I talk to myself in my head in stressful situations.
"That is precisely right. The team hopes you know how valuable your collaboration has been to the company, you are an exceptionally talented young woman."
I'm definitely getting fired.
"Which is why...the team has decided to offer you a permanent position as a Communications Executive. Making you the youngest woman to earn that spot here, at Aston Martin. I'm sure you will do great things, Miss Scott."
I don't know if I heard correctly, or if I'm having a stroke. But everybody smiled directly at me and started clapping. It takes me a minute to realize I'm not dreaming. I let out a deep breath I didn't know I was even holding in. Mr. Sproule walks over to me and stretches out his hand, so I immediately stand up and shake his hand firmly.
"Thank you so much for this opportunity. I will not let you down, Sir." My voice comes out a little shaky, but I'm not scared anymore. I am absolutely filled with joy and excitement! I can hear Ren and Alex whooping as everyone carries on with their clapping.
"I know you won't." Mr. Sproule smiles at me. "I need to catch a plane now, but you will be working with Miss Jones, she'll let you know everything about the job. You'll have another meeting at three, with Mark Silas. Congratulations again." He gives me a pat on my shoulder, and he was gone in a second.
It turns out this whole meeting that fell eternal to me, lasted exactly six minutes. Everyone starts to scatter out of the conference room and back to their offices. I follow Eleanor Jones, whom I realize was the only one who didn't clap. She walks fast and takes long steps, at fist it's hard to keep up with her, but we make it to her office without saying a word.
