Baxter
~
I drive up the drive way, I can see my grandfathers BMW parked right outside of the entrance. Great, he's home early today. That isn't a good sign. As I get out of my beat up car, I am welcomed by the chauffeur. "How are you today Mr. Lopez?", he asks. "Please Aiden, call me Baxter. Mr. Lopez makes me sound old like my grandfather." I don't like it when people call me Mr.Lopez. It makes me sound old and it makes me think of my parents. I never got the chance to know them growing up.

My mother passed away when she gave birth to me and my father....well....he left me when I was only 5 months old to my grandparents and he just disappeared in thin air. I never once gotten a birthday card, a call on Christmas Day. I never knew who my father and mother were. My grandfather wasn't much of a father figure in my life. All he cared about was work and money. He was barely in the picture. But my grandmother....she's a different story. She is a huge part of my life. She played the role of my mom when I didn't have one and I will forever thank her for that. Even though she isn't my real mom, I still call her mom. But I call my grandfather sir. He gave me strict orders to call him sir and nothing else. I make my way through the massive hallway to my grandfathers study.

Knock, knock, knock

"Come in", says a stern voice from the opposite side of the door. I place the palm of my hand on the handle of the door and take a deep breath before entering the room. "You wanted to see me sir?" I say as soon as I entered the room. "You do not speak until you are told Baxter", grandfather says as he reads the daily newspaper. Grandfather finally looks up from after finishing god knows what and snarls at me. "What are you wearing? Why are you so...dirty?" He asks in a disgusted voice. "I just came back from soccer practice sir." Grandfather rolls his eyes as I said that to him. He isn't a big fan of soccer or any other sports that involves dirt. "Why are you wasting your time on soccer? It won't take you anywhere in life. You should focus on school so you can get into a good business school and take over my business! Soccer is just a waste of time and money" Grandfather thinks extra curricular activities are a waste of time. They won't make us rich in the near future. But I don't care if soccer won't make me a millionaire or not. I love playing it. Soccer is my passion! It's everything for me! It defines who I am! Without soccer, it's like there is no color in the world. "For me soccer isn't a waste of time. It's very important for me and if you were to open your eyes, you would see how happy I am playing it!" As soon as I said that I heard him laughing at at statement.

"Sure, soccer makes you happy Baxter.....but that doesn't mean it will make you rich." He says as he takes a sip of his afternoon coffee. It angers me how he only cares about money. Money is the only thing that makes him happy in this world. He doesn't care about family or friends. All he cares about is the money and the reputation he has with it. "Baxter, you will be graduating from high school in 10 months and have you considered any business schools you will apply to?" There it is....the same question he asks me every single day when I come home from practice. And I always say the same over and over again, "Yes sir I have applied to over five different business school and I got accepted to almost all of them." He gives me a nod of approval and gestures me to leave his study. Thank god, if I stayed there any longer I would have had an heart attack.

When I left the study, an eroma filled my nostrils.  Hmmmm, chocolate chips cookies. I make my way quickly to the kitchen and find grandma baking a fresh batch of cookies. "Mom this looks delicious!" I say as I reach out to grab a fresh baked cookie. "Don't touch, they are still hot Baxter!" Mom says as she is wacks my hand away. Darn it, I really wanted to try moms cookies. They are my favorite!

I call grandma mom cause she was there when my mom wasn't. She raised me as if I was her own and loved me no less. I would give her the world. She took me in after my birth mother passed away and my birth father just left me. I grew up not knowing who my real parents are....till this day I still have no idea how my parents are. Who they are. But the question that races around my mind is.....why? Why did my father give me up willingly to my grandparents and.....left me? Was I  not enough for him? Did he look at me as a burden cause my birth mom died when she gave birth to me? The answers to my questions are still blank and I don't think they will be filled anytime soon. But I made a vow to my unborn child and my future wife. I won't ever abandon them both. I will make sure I'll stay with them both through tough the good times and the bad. Through thick and tin. I'll always be there with them. I won't make the same mistake my birth father made with me......I promise

"Baxter are you okay?", mom says as she looks at me worryingly. I put on a strong smile and say, "yeah mom, I'm more then okay." I reach out to grab a cookie and mom wacks my hand away again. Dang it! My phone starts to ring and I pick it up to see who it is. It's Jasper. "Sorry mom but I have to take this. I'll see you at dinner", I quickly kiss her cheek and make my way to the gardens and answer the call.

"Baxter get your sorry ass ready. Andrew and I scored tickets to tonight's soccer game!" Jasper says energetically while Andrew is laughing in the background. "No shit. For real?! How?? I thought they were sold out!" This is unbelievable! These tickets were sold out for weeks not and Jasper has them!! "Believe it baby. You, me and Andrew are going to the big game tonight. Get ready man. We will pick you up in fifth-teen." Jasper hangs up the phone and I'm still flabbergasted. Shit!! We are going to see the big game! "Who was that honey?" Mom asks curiosity. "Mom that was Jasper and he said that he has three tickets to the big soccer game tonight!" Mom started to squeal when she heard the news. She is a huge soccer fan too. Mom was actually the person who encouraged me to play soccer. She took me to the field when I was three and started to teach me how to kick, and pass it. Ever since then I was in love with soccer. "What are you waiting for Baxter?! Go and get ready so you can get go!"

I quickly run up to my room to get ready for the game. I quickly took a shower and changed my clothes and my way downstairs. But when I was downstairs,  I hear a noise coming from the kitchen. I quickly ran to make sure if everything is okay.....and that's when my heart sank to the floor.
