"What just happened?" Jack panicked when we got inside my bright yellow room.
"Why do you think I know what happened?" I ask him as he ran his hand through his hair.
"Well you are the smartest kid in town" he states. I pause to think for a moment.
"I think we need to go back to where this mystery started on that dark night eight years ago." I state sitting down. "My father was sent to prison for life when I was six. Days before my eighth birthday my brother didn't come home. My mother called the police and they searched for weeks but found nothing. My mother had her suspicions but she wouldn't tell me. She always said she would do anything to keep us safe but she forgot him and abandoned me." I say tears swelling up me eyes.
"Was there any clues leading up to you moving in here?" He asked me calmly trying to get back on track. I nodded.
"At my birthday party my mom stepped outside with someone I was curious to find out who it was so I followed and hid behind a large rock. She was whisper shouting at aunt Lou. I couldn't make out what the conversation was about but my mom was not happy. I ran back inside before they could see me as there argument cane to and end. Ever since my mom came back into the house that day she would spend all of her time with me." I smiled at the happy thoughts of those days with my mother.
"What happened the night of the storm?" Jack asked curiously. I had never really told anyone about it because I was scared even if I didn't show it. I sigh and closed my eyes remembering the worst night of my life.
"April I need you to come watch the bakery for a minute!" Aunt Lou called from the bottom of the stairs causing me to break my thoughts. "Oh and Jacks mother just called he needs to go home" she added. We looked at each other and nodded. He stood up and grabbed his bag off my chair.
"Tomorrow in the garden 3pm" I tell him. We head downstairs and go our separate ways. I can't sleep that night as I can't stop thinking about this mystery. My mom and brother are still out there I know it. I give a hopeful smile before drifting off to sleep.
All morning I'm working in the bakery but aunt Lou has errands to run and closes early. I rush outside to wait for Jack in the garden. He runs over a few minutes later and sits down in the grass next to me.
"So what happened that night? the suspense has been killing me" Jack asked eagerly. I nod trying to regain the thought.
"I remember my mom read me my favourite story before bed. I curled up under my blankets and fell asleep. I later woke up to the thunder and a crash in my house. I crawled out of bed to see what the crash was. When I looked around the corner I saw my mother packing bags. She looked up and noticed me. Tears filling her eyes but she still put on her sweet smile to try and comfort me. I asked her what was happening. She simply said oh darling you are going to aunt Lou's for the night. I was scooped into her arms and grabbed my bags. When we arrived here she started sobbing I was confused and sad to see her like this. My aunt grabbed me before I could hug mom goodbye. Then She left without a trace. That was until a week later they found a body." I finish.
"Well if they found a body how do you know that she is alive. To me a dead body seems like good evidence a person is dead." Jack commented
"Something my mother taught me was that everything is not like it seems." I say simply.
"So what's your plan now?" Jack asked.
