That night my aunt and I go to the town hall meeting about the missing people.
"I assure you our police force is on the case but for now you have nothing to worry about. Just stay out of the forest at night." Our town mayor announces before the village erupts into yelling and arguing. Jack and I slip out into the hall to talk privately.
"You better not be thinking what I think you are" jack says giving me a warning look.
"Jack you know as well as I do that our police aren't going to do anything about this they don't know what I know." I argue.
"Then tell them what you know." Jack tells me.
"No I can't do that I promised my mom I wouldn't tell anyone." I shake my head.
"But April I don't want you to get caught up in this. They could find you guilty if you keep looking into it and then you would end up in jail just like your father." He whisper yells to me in the empty hall. I scoff at his words and hear a door open behind me. When I turn to see who is there it's my aunt Lou. She rushes over to me grabs my arm quickly and drags me out of the building.
"What's going on?" I ask her as she still has a surprisingly strong grip on my forearm.
"It's not safe for you we need to get home quickly. You will not be permitted to leave this house." She explains as we get inside and she locks the door.
"What why?"
"Because people are going missing and I promised your mother I would keep you safe. So from now on you will continue your learning from home and work with me in the bakery." She said simply before urging me up to my room.
I can't believe I'm not allowed to go to school today I hope jack doesn't wait for me and miss class. Nobody else's parents are locking them in at home so why is aunt Lou? Maybe she found my clues and research. Maybe she thinks that this mystery kidnapper is coming for me. But why?
"Hello Lou I brought April's homework from school today is she feeling alright?" Jack asked as he talked to my aunt in the bakery.
"She is fine but she will be staying home from now on, it's safer for her that way. I will be sure to give her this homework." Aunt Lou said taking the papers from him.
"Oh alright then could I talk to her and explain the homework?" He questioned the on edge lady.
"No you will not be allowed to see or speak to her anymore. She will figure out the homework on her own. Now goodbye." She warned. With that he nodded and left the store.
"Who was that?" I ask walking out of the kitchen.
"Oh it was nothing to worry about just your friend jack dropping off some homework. Now run along dear and get to work on it." She said giving me the papers. I slowly left the bakery but ran once I got into the house. I sprinted up to my room where I knew I had to talk to jack. I threw on a coat and crawled out of my window. My room was on the second floor but there was a tree outside that I climbs down.
Once I got outside I chased after jack trying to catch him. "Jack!" I called as I ran through the path in the forest.
"April what's going on?" He asked when I caught up to him.
"I was hoping you could tell me." I say trying to steady my breathing from running.
