When I got home from school I saw a lady sitting in the kitchen with my aunt. "Hello?" I said wondering who the lady was. They both looked up at me and smiled.
"Hello you must be April Stewart I'm Hanna Armstrong I'm a recruiter for the gifted boarding school." The woman introduces. She has shoulder length black hair and clear blue eyes.
"April can you go watch the bakery?" My aunt asked cutting off our conversation. I nod and make my way to the bakery making sure to leave the door open so I can eavesdrop. "She will not be attending your gifted school she will be staying here with me where I can keep an eye on her end of conversation." Aunt Lou says harshly to mrs Armstrong.
"But if you'll consider her mother's wishes—" Hanna starts.
"No she is under my care and she will not be leaving. I think it's best you go now." Aunt Lou said urging her out of the house. I lean against the door taking in the information. My mother wanted me to go to a gifted school. Why? And why doesn't aunt Lou want me to leave? I have to talk to Jack. Aunt Lou enters the bakery as I jump startled from my thoughts.
"Hello aunt Lou can I go over to Jacks house to work on my homework with him?" I ask the older woman as she puts on her apron.
"Yes child but you must be home by 8:00 I don't want you out late with all of these people going missing." Aunt Lou says concerned.
"Don't worry I'll be home before then." I say as I give her a kiss on the cheek and grab my bag rushing out of the door. I ran to Jacks house my thoughts racing. I finally reached the grey house and knocked on the red door. Jacks mother answered the door.
"Hello dear are you here for Jack?" She asked. I nod my head. "Jack you have a visitor!" She calls you the stairs as I enter the house. He runs down to see me.
"April what are you doing here are you alright." He asks. I nod and he understands this is about my mother's case. "Come on up we can do our homework." He says. "So what is it did you find another clue?" He asks eagerly as he shuts his bedroom door. I stare at the floor as I sit on his bed.
"Did you know I was gifted?" I ask him.
"Well of course you are the smartest girl in our town." He states sitting in his chair.
"There was a woman at our house today she claimed she was a recruiter for a gifted school. Aunt Lou made me go to the bakery but I eavesdropped and heard the woman say that my mother wanted me to go to that school but my aunt doesn't want me to leave her." I explain.
"Was there anything that your mother left you saying she wanted you to go to that school?" Jack asked. I shake my head.
"No but maybe this is bigger than we thought." I say standing up. "I'm going back to my old house to find another clue." I state.
"April that's crazy it's not safe with all of these kidnappings." Jack protests.
"Then you can stay here but I'm going to find my mother." I say as I storm out of his room. The sun is starting to set as I walk up the driveway to the old house. The door creeks open as I carefully walk in. I walk around and go into my old room. I pick up a photo of my mom with my brother and I. Then I hear a creek in the floor. I turn around to see a shadowy figure standing in the doorway. I freeze in place.
