Hero POV (4 years ago):
Ringgg!
Ringgg!
Rin-
"What?!" I yell into my phone without checking the caller ID, I am in no mood to have bullshit calls in the middle of the night.
"Stop being a dick, Hero, I need you to come pick me up." My little sister Mercy replies on the other end of the phone, I hear cars in the background driving.
"Well, you just woke me up from my slee-"
"Please, Hero? It's about to start raining and I don't want to walk through the dark with it raining." She pleads, with a hint of fear in her tone.
"Where are you?" I ask her with a sigh as I roll out of bed to slip my slides on.
"Umm, I'm at the edge of the woods close to town." She whispers shamefully, I can practically sense her looking down at her shoes.
"What the fuck Mercy?! You know that's neutral land, anyone can hurt you there!" I exclaim over the phone, now I'm the one with fear, anything can happen to her and I don't think I can be there in time to stop it.
"I know, I know, I'll explain everything in the car." She replies calmly to try and defuse my anger.
"You better," I tell her as I walk over to where my keys are laying on my desk.
"Haha, love you byeee!" She yells.
"I love you too."
"When I went to the tree line, she uh, she wasn't there. Only her phone which the screen was shattered." Tears fall from my eyes as I recall the horrid memories. "Maybe my family is right, it's my fault she died. If I would have gotten there sooner-"
"No, Hero. It's not your fault, but how do you know she's dead?" Jo asks curiously.
"I felt our sibling bond break, that only happens when they die," she looks away with sorrowful eyes. But then after a few minutes of what looks like her thinking hard, a spark elites in her eyes, "what?" I ask her with furrowed brows.
"Well if I'm right about what I'm thinking, then your sister is still alive." She turns her face back to me then gets up and straddle my lap.
"What? What are you talking about?" Confusion runs through me.
"Please just trust me, Hero." She looks at me with soft eyes.
"I do, but just tell me what you mean." I hold onto her hips and look intently into her eyes.
"Let's just say, some witches are powerful but I'm the most powerful." Before I can say anything else, she takes one of my hands in hers. With my palm up, her middle finger starts to trace the lines on my palm while murmuring words under her breath that sound to be Latin. Her eyes roll to the back of her head and her skin glows as her chants start.
"victima et societatis vinculum disrumpant qui celat, indica mihi.
victima et societatis vinculum disrumpant qui celat, indica mihi.
victima et societatis vinculum disrumpant qui celat, indica mihi." She repeats the unknown fraise in a whisper.
(Translation: Break the bond that hides the victim, reveal them to me)
Suddenly my body starts to burn and I try to pull my hand away from Josephine, but she doesn't budge. Her hold on my hand remains tight, as her middle finger trances my palm faster. "Stop! Please stop!" I cry as the pain takes over my body. It doesn't compare to the pain the night Jo died but still hurts immensely to the point where tears are occupying my face.
Just then my family bursts through the door, all of them in pain just the same. "What the hell is happening?!" My fathers voice booms. At his voice, Jo's chants grow louder.
"What is she doing?!" My mother's yells, then blood starts to leak from Jo's nose and runs till it's in her mouth.
"I don't know!!" I reply while still being in overwhelming pain, yet I'm still worried about what Jo is doing to herself.
"Its almost over, love." Tessa's voice rings in my head as Jo continues to chant. The burning sensation tortures my body and my families for a few more minutes until it all suddenly goes away and the familiar feeling of my sisters presence flows through me.
"I broke the spell that made you all think Mercy was dead," Jo breathes as sweat rolls down her face and she lazily smears the blood on her face while trying to wipe it away with her hand.
'Mercy?' I ask through the bond, to test it out.
'Hero?' My sisters sweet voice replies back, but even with just hearing my name alone, I can hear the pain she is in.
'I'm here Mercy?! I'm here!' I exclaim.
'How?' She replies with confusion.
'My mate broke the spell that hid you from us, but enough about that. Do you know where you are?'
'No,' she replies groggily.
'Don't worry, we'll find you.' I tell her.
'Please hurry,' her weak voice pleads.
Just then Jo slumps over and passes out on my chest. "Shit!" Picking Jo up, I rush out of the room and to the pack hospital. "Your gonna be fine, baby, your gonna be fine." I whisper to the passed out Jo in my arms. When I walk in, automatically every head turns over to me and they all freeze, "help her!" I growl out, everyone starts working again.
Nurses run over with gurney, I lay her down onto it and the moment I do they all jog off with her. I'm about to follow but a hand on my shoulder stops me, "let her go, son. You can't be in there when the work on her," my fathers voice tells me. Turning around, I see him, my mom and my brother all there with small smiles on there faces. "What do you lot want?" I snap with a deep growl.
"To say we're sorry," my mother replies softly, I just scoff and roll my eyes.
"Okay, now if you don't mind I'm gonna go back to my mate and help her recover and also work on finding Mercy." With that I turn and walk away.
