I slam the door behind me and take a deep breath. I have to keep my game face on, so no bad vibes, no thinking about what Blaise said, no nothing.
"Ruby? Is that you?" My mother says, her voice drifting down the stairs.
"Yeah, its me." I say, trying to keep my voice happy.
"Oh good! Now, tell me all about that date! How did it go?" She says, practically bouncing down the stairs. Nice to know that one of us isn't worried.
"It was great!" I smile falsely, telling her about everything. Well, almost everything. Oh shut it you! I yell at myself. A small part of me wants to tell her, needs to tell her. Luckily she was too excited and happy to notice my small thought. Phew.
I hear a crash in the kitchen and my eyes go wide.
What if it's him? How did he find out? Can he read my mind too? Oh god he probally can! He probally knew the second he mentioned it. What if he didn't have the heart to do it himself, so he told his father! That would make it 1,000 times worse! IM GOING TO DIE! GOODBYE WORLD! Oh and world? You're not as harsh as most people say, you we're pretty okay for me. Except for the part where you had to put me in danger and kind of ruin my life..... Okay, I take back what I said, you're pretty cruel.
My mother raises her eyebrow at me, but moves towards the kitchen. "Kate? Are you alright?"
"Uh... I think so...." Kate mutters. I move towards the kitchen to get a better look and try not to laugh. One of the top cupboards is open and a pot is lying on the floor by her feet. The best part is that one of the cereal boxes had fallen on her head, and there was cereal everywhere.
My mother just sighs as she and Kate clean up the cereal. As she cleans, she speaks. "So Ruby, care so tell me what you were thinking about when you heard the crash?" As I hear this, my stomach drops.
"I....uhhhh....well you see...." My mind goes blank as I try to think of an excuse, without thinking too much about it, I may need to test that tinfoil hat theory. I finally come up with a decent explanation. "Well, recently I had read a pretty scary book, and I guess I kind of freaked out and thought that the evil character was here to kill me." To be honest, I was kind of proud of that lie.
"Oh really?" She asked raising her eyebrow. "What's the book callled?" Man she's good.
I tried to remember a book that would be scary or freaky enough to fit the description. Bingo. "Well, if you must know, it's called The Diviners." (This is an actual book that I have read, which is prett freaky, but I love it at the same time. I'm weird like that.)
"Alright, alright. I'm just worried about you. Now shoo so we can clean up." She sighs.
"Hey, at least it wasn't my mess this time." I say as I shrug. At this comment Kate glares at me but I can see that she's trying not to smile.
I decide to go up to my room. I quietly close and lock the door behind me. I grab my journal and flip to a blank page. I start to sketch any possibilities of a tinfoil hat, or a normal looking hat with some sort of tinfoil protection. Well, I'm going to try to test this theory, I might as well research it. I grab my laptop and get ready for some research. That's when I hear my mother scream, and the crash of a plate breaking.
