It was after school the next day and we were sitting under the beech tree by the lake. Ron was skipping stones, trying to hit the Giant Squid, while Harry and myself were reading for homework.
"So... what happened in the Common Room after the twins and I happened to leave?" Harry asked me, looking up from his Divination chart.
"Nothing." I said, a little too quickly. I looked away at Ron, who was searching for flat stones.
Harry smirked. "Something happened. You haven't spoken all day!" He said.
"Keep your voice down!" I hissed.
It was true. Ron and I hadn't looked at each other, nevermind talked. What could we possibly say to each other after the events of last night? Harry wouldn't understand.
"You can tell me." Harry said, winking. Okay, maybe he did have somewhat of an idea.
Harry's whole mood suddenly changed. He deflated and said "Oh, bloody hell."
I looked where he was looking and saw the gang of Slytherins who always laughed at us during lessons, especially Potions, where they found Professor Snape's taunts entertaining.
Unfortunately, they saw us and started whispering. Then they came up to us. Draco Malfoy, started taunting us. Ron hadn't noticed yet, as he was still too busy skipping stones at the Giant Squid.
"Look at this, Potter and Y/L/N! Are you planning on who you are going to ask to the Ball? Don't aim too high, you don't want to get your heart broken. You may as well start by asking the Giant Squid."
The Slytherins snickered. At the mention of the Squid, I looked out at Ron. The Slytherins noticed.
"Ah, Weasley!" Ron turned around and walked back up the bank to meet us under the tree.
"What do you want, Malfoy?" Ron asked in a bored voice.
"I was just helping Potter matchmake for the Christmas Ball. Who're you taking, Weasley? Your old mum?"
The gang started to laugh. I stood up.
"Just go away. Leave us alone!" I said, heat rising in my face.
Draco walked up to me.
"Who are you taking?" I asked him, nose in the air. I started to feel angry.
"Eloise McCarp." He said proudly. His face was so smug I could've kicked him.
"How much did you pay her?" I couldn't stop myself from yelling back. I was tired of his taunts. He was an idiot who put those below him down. I decided this would be the last time he was going to taunt us and our friends.
"Y'know, you are a complete fool! You skulk around as if you're better than everyone, always putting us down. The truth is, Draco, you are scared that if you didn't do this, your filthy friends wouldn't think so highly of you. You make me sick." I spat.
Malfoy snarled cruelly. I prepared myself for his next childish insult. Only it wasn't childish, it was utterly wrong. No one could've prepared themself for what he said next.
Malfoy turned to Ron. "You know what, Weasley? Why don't you take Y/N? It would be perfect, and I'm sure your Muggle-loving silly father would love to see it. A complete idiot and a mudblood."
Everyone went silent. Completely silent. I breathed in sharply, shocked. I felt tears forming in my eyes. It was true I was Muggleborn, but to use such a slur was one of the worst, if not the worst word you could ever use against a Muggleborn. Tears ran down my cheeks and my vision went blurry.
