Over the next week I went through my classes and my days, not showing any emotion, especially in front of Ron and Harry. I still had to be near him, as we sat together in a lot of classes. It hurt, but I didn't let it show.
Harry was sort of bouncing between us. While he spent a lunchtime time with me, he told me that he had found himself a date to the Ball. He said he was taking Pavarti Patil and that Ron was taking Penny Thompson. I pretended not to care.
The night of the Ball arrived and I was in my room, getting ready with Ginny. She curled my hair for me and I did her makeup. Before we left, she talked to me.
"You look amazing. Please, let's not have any boy drama and have a fun night. Okay?"
I nodded.
I exited the dorm and made my way carefully down the stairs. My dress was beautiful. The skirt was long and flowing, with small flowers and sparkles embroidered on it. It was a beautiful deep blue dress. The top had a v-neck, and the waist was cinched elegantly. Ginny had rushed ahead to meet Dean in the entrance hall, so I entered the Common Room by myself. As I did so, Harry and Ron came down at the same time.
They both looked very charming in their dress robes. I smiled weakly and took a deep breath. I looked at Ron, who's jaw was practically hanging open. He was looking at me, in obvious shock. It looked like he wanted to say something. I quickly walked away.
Like Ginny said, I was not going to let him spoil my night. Yet I couldn't get the picture of him and I dancing together out of my head...
I met Neville in the entrance hall. He had brushed up quite finely too. I walked up to him.
"You look... pretty." He said, smiling shyly. I grinned back at him.
"You look nice too." I said.
I took his arm and we walked into the hall together. It was decorated beautifully.
There were large chandeliers suspended on the ceiling. Around the walls was gorgeous celestial decorations. Stars and moons hung everywhere, and ice sculptures stood around the hall.
The hall began to fill in, and the music soon began. Neville and I started to dance, and he was actually quite average at it. He wasn't quite as bad as Harry, who waltzed past a few times. He looked extremely awkward and I couldn't help but laugh at how stupid he was.
After a while, we sat down with a drink. We began to talk.
"It's quite nice here, isn't it?" I said, taking a sip.
"Yeah, it is." Said Neville, looking around the hall.
I looked at the dance floor and saw Ron and Penny. They were dancing, and I couldn't help but feel jealous. Ron suddenly turned and looked at me. I felt my face go red and I turned back to Neville. He definitely had noticed.
He made a face at me.
"I'm sorry, Neville." I said, smiling apologetically. "My thoughts are a little occupied."
"It's okay." He said. "I understand."
We sat in silence for a bit. I looked back at Ron, who seemed to have disappeared now.
"He broke my heart, Neville."
Neville nodded.
"I get it." He said.
"You do?" I asked, turning back to him. He nodded again.
"I know what it feels like to like someone who doesn't feel the same."
He looked at me.
Oh. How could I have been so stupid? He meant me.
I opened my mouth to say something, but Neville interrupted.
