“Where’s Ayat?”

Mum was working in the kitchen again. She's such a workaholic. We fought in the morning. Same thing, a hundred times. She just won’t tell me when she's sick. I’ve told her so many times to tell me when the symptoms first occur and not when its so bad you can’t hide. I just don’t understand why she can’t understand that she'll bother me more that way.

“ I thought she was coming with you.”

“No. She was supposed to come in the bus.”

“but the bus already came and left the community”

“What? Wait, i'll call the school authorities”

The phone rang once and went straight to voice-mail. The second time I called they finally picked up

“St. Xavier’s , this is Radhika Mishra. How may I help you?”

“Hello Radhika. Can you check if my daughter’s still at school? Ayat Anand Joshi, Grade 11 B"

“ Hold on a second ma’am…. No ma’am, currently there are no students on the premises. It says here that she takes the bus. Route no.11 is currently stuck at Mahanagar junction due to road blockage, she should be home in another hour"

“She takes Route 15 but thanks, I’ll look into it"

“ No problem ma’am. Have a nice day"

“I think she's at that girl's house. Meena or something”

I looked at mum. She was trying to console me.

“Meher. Yeah, I’ll call her"

The call was immediately received.

“Hello?”

“Hello Meher beta,  it's Maithreyi aunty. I wanted to know if Ayat was with you"

“Oh aunty, uhhhh…. Yeah, she's with me. She's just in the washroom. Should I ask her to call you when she comes out?”

“No, that’s fine. Just tell her that if she goes to someone’s house again without telling me it won’t be pretty. That’s goes to you too Meher,  you should at least inform me”

“Sorry aunty, it won’t happen again. I’ll tell Ayat too"

“Its okay. Just ask her to  come home early”

“Yes aunty.  I’m sorry aunty"

My eyes fell on her trophy next which was kept right next to the fridge cabinet. Second place in track. That girl is more trouble than pride
