Chloe and Diane were pretty sure that the opportunity to ruin Sabrina's reputation would come on its own, so they stopped weighing the matter and focused on their studies, which turned out to be a prudent decision. Gary's heartthrob nature proved itself to work. Much was made of an improper party that he himself had attended, and rumors suggested that his behavior did not respect Sabrina.
Sabrina was said to have arrived at the Bainbridge home in person while he was at the event, and was greeted by Mrs. Bainbridge in dismay, hoping that the reason for her visit was not the news that she was pregnant. Sabrina waited until Gary arrived, late at night with minty breath. He insisted that she was only with some friends with her disheveled appearance.
"Don't lie to me," Sabrina said in a brittle voice.
Such rumors left Chloe satisfied for only a few hours until she could not notice in Sabrina any sign that manifested her sadness. While Meryl claimed to hear her cry in the bathrooms, it just wasn't enough.
The presidential elections were closer than ever, and as it is well known, these kinds of occasions are usually popularity contests. Diane then theorized that despite the troubles between Sabrina and Gary, it is quite possible that they were trying to hide them for the sake of the election, as it was highly expected that he would win.
The candidate who had Sabrina on his side was the undoubted winner. She happened to be an example of society, coming from a good family, containing a natural beauty without looking overly outstanding, and not very humble either. The young woman had easygoing ways and whoever talked to her would not suffer uncomfortable silences. And to this, we must add the fact that he was exceptionally bright, already mastering four languages and sharing with his mother his preference for reading.
These characteristics undoubtedly helped her to be regarded as an exemplary young woman who could be easily liked by almost anyone, and this was something Gary knew very well.
Diane claimed that Sabrina's relationship was arranged, or that was what she led her closest circle to believe: when they were intimate, she said that for the sake of her image she must date a handsome, friendly and outstanding young man. It seemed to be the second Bainbridge family, yet it seemed that she had intentions that went beyond projecting a good image, since she had often noticed her being sentimental, something that Angelica had also noticed and preferred not to say a word. They would know that she was sensitive to those issues.
Even so, it seemed that the couple was closer than ever, and that nothing could separate the premeditated union.
