The halls of the St. Andrew Institute were filled with the desintereset morning conversations that echoed on the white floor as more students entered, and among them, Ms. Russell shared with her classmates, who listened carefully, with eyes full of enthusiasm the goals she had for that year, until a familiar voice approached them to say greet:
"Good morning." Her eyes showed a seriousness that didn't do justice to her fragile voice. She couldn't help but stare at the fineness that Sabrina and her friends displayed all the time, a look Chloe could only dream of. For some reason, their mien reminded her of the pictures of the modern aristocrat ladies.
The young women greeted her with warmth.
"I hope to see you this evening." Sabrina told her.
"This evening?"
She was reminded of the ball.
"It will be so divine!" Monica yelled with her particular and almost impossible to reach high-pitched voice. They all saw her again.
Angelica, who was present, rolled her eyes in despair. Unlike her peers, she rarely smiled. Her gaze was partly filled with cynicism and other part with inexplicable boredom. Anyone who did not know her would think that she is not comfortable with the presence of anyone, because that is the impression she gave.
Returning to the conversation, Chelo excused herself and stepped back.
"I will not be attending tonight's ball."
"Why?" Sabrina sighed. "You can't miss it. There will be adorable boys and the snacks will make you want to lick your gloves. I'd be offended if you don't attend."
"For much as I would like to," she lowered her head, "I was not invited."
The young women remained silent, and Chloe's eyes strayed to Sabrina's long, golden hair, for it was her main attribute. It was well known among her classmates that she had the most graceful mane.
"But Meryl was!" Monica hastened to reply. Angelica looked at her impatiently. "And she can take guests."
They went on like that for a moment, until finally Chloe had no choice but to accept, not thinking of how she would convince her friends to attend. Sabrina was not one of those who gave up so easily, she didn't take no for an answer. Classes would start soon, so the girls rushed to the classrooms.
"Chloe!" she heard a voice in the distance.
It was her friends walking with haste.
"I wanted to talk to you both!"
She then proceeded to express her desire to attend the ball.
"Have you lost your mind?" Diane snapped with a frown. "We had already agreed not to go."
"I did want to attend, yet, I was not going to overcome my opinion as you both didn't want to go."
"We can't change our minds right now. I need to order a dress, and there is no time for that."
"Then don't order anything, just buy something already made."
Diane's eyes widened. She didn't blink for what seemed like an eternity to Chloe, who wondered if she must have said that. She knew that her friend easily lost her temper.
"Take it easy, Diane" Meryl said, touching her shoulder. "Breathe... Chloe has never attended a NEAIS ball. I would also be curious as to what they are like, do not blame her."
"They are just like any other ball" She said taking her hands to her head.
Chloe sighed and Meryl insisted with tender eyes. In the distance, Diane watched Sabrina with her friends.
"I do not think I will like the kind of people who will be there."
Chloe and Meryl turned around.
"You are not sure they are going to attend." Meryl commented desperately.
"Actually," Chloe whispered and lowered her head, "they told me they will be attending."
"Why are you talking to them?" Diane demanded and dropped her bag on the floor. She laughed as she shook his head.
"Whatever happened is in the past."
"Oh Chloe, you are innocent!"
"Are you angry?"
"Not at all ... I'm rather moved by your innocence," she said in an annoyed mocking tone." You are sweet; this world is not prepared for people like you."
"They seem to have overcome any rough edges between you, why not do the same?"
"They are evil!"
"You're hysterical." said Meryl, turning her head away.
"You were not friends with them." She placed her hand on her chest and took a step forward. "You do not know them in the least."
"So will you come with Meryl and me, or what?"
She picked up her bag.
"I'll go," she said with a mixture of arrogance and contempt, "I will only clarify that I do not have the desire to attend. Someone must open your eyes."
With one last breath she pushed his way through the girls, who wrinkled their noses and whispered laughable things about her recent attitude as they hurried on.
