Book Review on "Hana & Hanaan"
(by Jasmin A.)
If there was one word I could sum up that this book is; it's brilliant. Not only because Manahil says it's her first time writing a huge novel, but also because I have not read anything as effortlessly paced, as moving — yet, not entirely or even heavily romantic —, as strongly worded in quite a while. "Hana & Hanaan" is an adventure that had me reading way past the midnight moon. These two sisters (along with Nashwa, of course) made their place in my heart as soon as I started reading.
When I first looked through the book on Wattpad a few weeks ago, it caught my attention immediately. I hadn't seen or heard anything like it before. This heartbreaking tale of souls finding their place in each other's heart, healing through their pain, finding words of comfort for others over themselves and being soft, being kind will move you to tears. It's a gripping storyline with fantastic aesthetics that leave you hungry for more.
The twists and dilemmas leave you in a scandal, wondering if you must follow your heart or your mind to figure out what would happen next. I never saw them coming, those twists! They are so well-concealed and excellently put across, you might just mistake them for normalcy. I loved the chase, the hunt, the aftermath of every trial these characters faced, thriving in lessons from the first word. Ma Shaa Allah! 😍✨
Hana, in all ways possible, has the most perfect character development arch. From angsty teen-like to mature pre-adult thinking, the novel's swift narrative projects an image of lessons; both worldly and from religion. This book is a classic example of Muslim Fiction, especially the care that had been taken to avoid all unnecessary interactions. The presence of mahram in settings that included supervision wasn't strained in the least bit.
Hanaan on the other hand, is one of the smartest fourteen year-old girls I have come across, the depth of some of her words is mind-blowing. She's had her fair share of scars, yet the lengths to which her protectiveness of her sister goes is truly applaudable. I suppose she learnt this from Hana though, so the real praise should go there. 🥰
There are areas of improvement I'd like to point out though; and that is pacing towards the end of the book (which to me, sounded a little rushed), and the order of events in which you unfolded the last bits. There were emotionally heavy scenes (like the court case viewing) which, I felt were a little too dramatic to be taken seriously. But this is something I'm sure you can master with time, because you truly did start out great in the earlier chapters, Manahil. 💕
In other words, I highly recommend this book to everyone out there who wants to learn the true meaning of loving a soul for the sake of Allah swt. Like Hana and Hanaan love each other. My overall rating would be:
