Prologue

Annabeth

"I can't believe this! I mean she expects me to do all this stuff for her but then when I do, she gets mad and yells at me that I did it wrong!", I rant to my best friend, Percy. He nods his head, listening closely. "And don't even get me started on Bobby and Matthew. Those little monsters are so annoying."

Percy, being the good friend he is, listens to my complaining. "Well Annie, I mean she only yells at you right? Things could be much worse.", He says, cringing slightly

I sigh, "Yeah, your right. Maybe your head isn't as full as seaweed as I thought." He chuckled softly "Thanks for having my back."

"Don't worry wisegirl," He began, shoving his hands into his baggy blue hoodie he always wore . "I'll always be there for you. No matter how bad things get, I'll always be by your side."

I smile cheekily, "Thanks seaweed brain." I put my head on his shoulder. I feel him flinch but I ignore it. Little did I know that would be the last time I would see my best friend. For a while at least.

Percy

I really did mean my promise to Annabeth. I really did, but when I came home with my mother tied to a kitchen chair with a ziplock bag over her face, I freaked. Her face was blue and her chest wasn't moving up or down, Signifying that she wasn't breathing. I knew from all those action movies I saw with my mom, that she was dead, so I did the most manly thing I knew. I screamed.

"Shut the heck up you worthless brat!", my step father sneered as he slapped me across the face.

"Wha-wha what d-d-did y-y-you d-do.", I managed.

"Ah, I see you've noticed today's punishment. See Brain Boy, this is what happens when YOUR TWO HOURS LATE."

I whimper at the loudness of his voice. "You k-killed her!"

Gabe wrapped his meaty hands around my throat and shoved me against the wall. "You. I never want to hear your stupid, useless, ugly, voice again you hear."

I nod my head quickly

"Now" he started, shoving a worn suitcase at me. "Go pack, we leave at midnight." I nodded my head weekly and ran down the hall towards my room. I packed as quickly as I could and ran back downstairs. I walked into the kitchen and was met with Gabe holding a shovel. He threw me the shovel and it smacked me in the face. No doubt leaving a nasty bruise.

"Now, go bury your idiotic mother in the back." I nodded my head, tears welling up in my eyes. I grabbed my mother and dragged her to the back door.

I stabbed the shovel into the ground and stomped on the top rungs. I let out a soft sob and continued the process. My mother was the only reason I was still breathing. She was the joy and light of my life. She was the only reason I got up in the morning. The only reason why I tried to put up with Gabe. But now she's gone. Everything a stand for is gone.

When I finished, the moon was almost in the middle of the night sky. Signaling it was midnight.

I sigh deeply and walk inside.

We started to board The plane. I notest on the boarding pass Gabe gave to me that we were going to New York City. Just great. Once I was seated, I looked out the small oval window.I looked away. I put my hood up and my head down low. My eyes welled up with tears for the umptenth time today. I never will get to keep my promise to Annabeth.

Annabeth

I sat on the steps of my middle school. Today was the last day of six grade before the summer. I sighed deeply, my eyebrows furrowed with thought. He left me. He promised he would be by my side and he left. I put my head in my hands and sobbed quietly.

I felt a hand on my shoulder and I looked up. I was met with the face of one of Percy's friends Grover.

"Im sorry Annie." I glared at him. No one could call me that. Only him. His eyes widened as he realized his mistake.

"Oh I'm so sorry Annabeth! I didn't mean to!", He tried to apologies

"Whatever Grover. Anyways, do you know where he is?" he shook his head. "Where's the point, Grover. He probably just got kicked out of school again and transferred. He will be ok. Right?"
