[ authors note/introduction:]
——

hi there, this is a fun little one shot about Halloween at avonlea. with all your favourite characters AND Fred Wright because we were robbed of him in the show and i love his and Gilbert's friendship. this is kinda when they are the same ages as season 3, but it's modern yay. each part (three) has attached a song from Folklore, which you can listen to add a little to the story.

the only backstory you need is that Gilbert is feeling sad cause he knows he likes Anne but you know... Anne is in SERIOUS denial. anyways, Gilbert has been trying to get over her by avoiding her but he can't help it. He's falling, hard, and he knows it. Fred knows it. Diana knows it. Everyone knows it except Anne, and that's our problem. ———-
Get your favourite drink, snuggle under some blankets, and get comfortable :) i hope you enjoy...

"So not even your best friend can make Halloween interesting enough for you to get out of bed?"
"Nope."
Fred sighed, clutching a hand to his chest in feigned hurt, and flopped next to Gilbert Blythe on the bed with a huff.
"Not even with candy?"
"Not even with candy."
"Not fair!" Fred groaned, and turned his back to him in exaggerated disgust.
"Life's not fair Freddy." Gilbert stated forlornly.
"You're still upset about you-know-who, but that's not my fault! And it does not excuse you from ditching your friend on his favourite night of the entire year!" Fred pouted.
"Maybe Cole is doing something, or Diana. Go with them ok?"
"If I'm in any close proximity with Ms. Barry, I'll need support. Someone to catch me when I faint," Fred turned back onto his other side, facing Gilbert again. He was staring at the ceiling.
"You'll have Cole."
"No, Cole does not count as support. He's actually likely to endanger the situation more. I swear he enjoys watching me suffer around her." Fred was grumbling, and Gilbert tried to cover up his amusement with grumpiness.
"Then take Anne." he offered nonchalantly.
A short pause.
"Then there would be literally no chance of you coming," Fred concluded, smirking a little.
Gilbert shrugged. Fred took this as hope.
"So, you could be planning on breaking your annoying counterproductive behaviour of avoiding the girl of your dreams?" Fred questioned, too scared to draw breath.
"I didn't say that."
"You implied it."
Gilbert opened then closed his mouth a few times before finally responding.
"I don't know, Fred. Nothing seems to be working," he sighed.
"And what isn't working, exactly?" Fred asked, confused. Gilbert cut in.
"Enough chat Freddy," he sat up. Fred mirrored his movements, shocked at his sudden apparent enthusiasm for getting out of bed.
"This is, This means-?" Fred stuttered.
"Yes Fred, we'll go out together for Halloween. Let's go find something to do." Gilbert smiled al little at his friends ecstatic expression.

Anne checked her watch, it was 9:46. The sky was darkening with every minute that went by.
"It's cold!" Jerry grumbled, hugging himself in a effort to conserve heat, chattering his teeth deliberately.
"I told you to bring a coat!" Anne reminded, elbowing him. The two of them were walking side by side down the middle of the road, lined with houses a-glow with lanterns and fairy lights, and occasionally a ghost or zombie decoration. A few groups of kids laughed loudly as they messed around on the sidewalks, chatting and 'trick or treating'. But apart from that, the streets where quiet and still, there were little to no vehicles on the roads. Avonlea wasn't as lively as some other places were on Halloween. One of Jerry's dogs, 'Jesse', trotted loyally at his heels. She was the youngest of the Baynard's dogs, Jerry's favourite and uncoincidentally the most energetic and naughty. As for Jerry himself, after the past summer, he now towered high over his sister, and proudly boasts of being the tallest in the Cuthbert family. To Anne's annoyance (and reassurance, although she wouldn't admit it) he still acted like the scrawny stable hand she had met that day when she was 11. They bickered relentlessly as most siblings do, and Anne had become rather good at it, whilst Jerry would just fall into fits of laughter mid argument. This normally resulted in both kids breathless from giggling, rolling about on the floor.
"The Sloane's live just round here right?" Jerry checked, taking a right at the crossroad.
"Yeah," Anne replied.
They were planning on meeting Ruby, Cole, Diana, Charlie and Moody there to compete in the Sloane's 'Maze Race'. They had invited Gilbert and Fred, but Fred had called an hour ago saying he doubted either of them would make it. Anne was not surprised (this sort of thing was happening a lot lately) and she tried not to feel disappointed. The group wasn't the same with out Gil- with out everybody there. As the Sloane's house came into view, they could quickly tell that it wasn't going to be as quiet as former years. A large crowd flocked to the fields under the light of the full moon.

"Finally!" Diana grinned and ran to greet Anne and Jerry. She wore her raven hair in a low bun that bounced as she moved, a few strands of hair escaping it's ties.
"Sorry Di," Anne chuckled and returned her friend's embrace.
"You look lovely," she smiled "And Jerry! I'm glad you could come."
