DEREK POV
In his arms Dean cradled his granddaughter letting her tug at the beard growing down his neck. She seemed to take a liking to the grumpy man over the past few months, and he to her. Cas on the other hand was planted firmly in the living room, exhausted hands on his hips as he listened to his son go over how to care for Lottie for the millionth time.
"-I packed two blankets. The blue one his her favorite, she really loves it but sometimes she'll get it dirty from lugging it around and I'll trade it out for the green one while she's sleeping--she doesn't know the difference. And I'm really trying to ween her off that binky so when ever you can don't let her have it. Sometimes she'll throw it if she has a tantrum and that's the best time to take it really" he searched through the heavily packed diaper bag, looking for any visual reminders of anything he might have missed "Let's see what else-"
"Nothing. Nothing else at all son, you seem to forget we've raised a child before"
"I know it's ju-"
"Just nothing. Leave us be with our grand daughter, Derek please take him away before his head explodes"
I managed to smile widely, grabbing tightly onto his wrist "No problem sir"
"Dad, face time me every night! I'm not kidding"
"Goodbye Stiles" both men shouted letting the door slam behind their son.
On the road, I tried to ignore his fidgeting and tapping. For a moment I just stared off onto the road. I was partially nervous about the fact that I wasn't nervous about going out with Stiles at all. Despite the time between us it felt old and new all at the same time, and if anything it made me feel excited. If I could only get Stiles to calm down.
He had never been afraid about being alone with me until recently, but Still I had a feeling the date was not what had him ready to jump from his skin. There was only one other thing I could think of that could make Stiles so jumpy "She'll be fine" I spoke into the silent car. The radio was on low and there was a slight hum from the heater but besides that the the sound level in the car was at a solid two.
Then, like a volcano finally erupting, the words poured from his mouth and could be describe as nothing more than word vomit "I-I-I've never been away from her, I am literally the only protector she's ever known. I don't think this was a good idea, she could have come with us. A weekend seems like a really long time" beside myself, I sighed not knowing what to do with him "What is it?"
"Nothing. It's just...I guess I missed when you used to trust us"
"What are you talking about? Of course I do"
My response was calm, careful not to ruin the mood of the night "No Sti, you don't. I was there, that day with Kate, none of us were prepared for it. But you...you just went off and shut down. She hurt us all, and now it's like we're the ones being punished for what she put you through. But when you're ready we'll all be here, we'll always be here" determined to assure him I reached over tentatively to rub gently at his thigh.
There was no response that followed, perhaps he knew it was true or maybe he didn't.
With the night off to a rocky start I could only hope for a turn as I pulled into the nearly vacant lot. It looked as though we would have the place to ourselves, maybe it was what we needed. I was determined to get our relationship back, and soon, but it was looking to be a hard journey.
Stiles soundly unbuckled his belt, looking the building up and down "A hotel?"
"It's a resort!" I quickly corrected, I could only imagine Stiles' reaction if he thought I'd brought him to a hotel for sex for an entire weekend, though I doubt that would be on the table for a while "There are activities, and a theatre, and a chef"
"You hate activities" He chuckled, struggling to grab his duffle bag from the trunk.
"I've changed" I tried to reassure. Knowing I could handle the weight I made an effort to take the bag for him. The result ended up being my hand settling on top of his. He stared down at our grazing flesh, like he was frozen in time he didn't move, just rubbed the pad of his thumb against my palm.
There was a hitch in my breath liking the reaction I was getting from him. In an instant he glanced up, looking at me from under his eye lids. A fond smile spread across his fcae and in a moment of vulnerability he cupped my jaw, stroking the skin there "I missed those eyes" the whisper escaped his lips longingly, and I could feel my eyes had turned their alpha red "Regardless of what you think, I missed you very much. And I trust you more than anything, it's just hard sometimes, but I do. I trust you Derek Hale"
We were on the tenth floor. Able to look out upon the small city of Beacon Hills. There wasn't much, but enough lights to illuminate the night and make the scene beautiful. That's where I found Stiles, his bag thrown at his feet and he was peering out of the window.
"You okay?" I asked, getting him to face me.
"I'm actually great" Holding out my hand I led him to the section of the suite that was set up for our planned dinner. He was a small man but could put away a steak and smile while he did it. There was champagne, a baked potato, and snap peas. The entire scene was sprinkled in rose peddles, a decision I spent quite a bit making.
"Wow Derek I-...I guess I don't remember you being such a romantic"
"I've got you back now. Thought I'd try something different"
I could hear his heart beat pound as he surged forward and pecked my cheek. Recovering, he clapped his hands together "Well let's get this weekend started then"
