Preston wasn't going to go to the library the next day, but for some reason he decided to. He walked the familiar route feeling depressed but didn't really have an exact reason for feeling so. He pushed the door to the library and stepped in. He nodded to the librarian. She used to not like him, she didn't really like anyone in the highschool, but he was always quiet and respectful so she didn't mind him anymore. Preston walked back to where he was before and got the books again. He sat down, rubbing his eyes in exhaustion. He had them shut for a moment prepping himself to begin to work. He opened them before he would fall asleep. He looked up and almost fell out of his chair.
Across the table from him the same girl from the day before stood. He gaped with his mouth open for a while in surprise. She had a warm smile and she sat down across from him. Her eyes were a vibrant green and had an intelligent look in them. He already felt his face turning red.
"Hey," she said with a smile and pulled something out of her pocket, "you left this here yesterday."
She slid a playing card across the table. He must have left it there when he left in such a rush.
"Oh, um...thank you," Preston said with an embarrassed smile.
"I'm Lucie," she laughed sensing the awkwardness.
"I'm uh..." Preston paused but he wasn't sure why, "Preston."
"I think I'll call you ace," she said sitting down in the chair. She didn't look around when she talked, she looked right at you the whole time.
"Wha- why?" He asked. She pointed at the card. It was an ace. Preston couldn't help but laugh, which he hadn't really done in a while. It felt... Well nice.
"But my names Preston," he said warming up to the new bubbly girl. She shook her head.
"Always liked the name Ace and now I have an excuse to call someone that, so I will."
Preston laughed and shrugged, "okay."
"What are you doing, Ace," Lucie said her eyes twinkling.
"I'm doing a project for school," he answered, liking the sound of his new name. She smiled.
"For what class?"
"Biology" he answered she nodded.
"So I saw you doing card tricks yesterday," she always seemed to speak quickly and excitedly. She seemed very hyper yet calm at the same time.
Preston nodded, embarrassed.
"Do you have your cards with you?" She asked. He nodded again. Lucie laughed, "show me a trick!"
He nervously pulled out his deck of cards. He had her take a card out and put it back in. He began setting them down on the table in confusing rows. He had her pick the row that her card was in, without telling him the card. He continued with the trick, his hands were shaking nervously. Was she just playing with him? Did she really care? After a few minutes the trick was finished. The card that should be the one she picked was turned over on the table so the decorate back was facing up.
"So this Should be my card?" Lucie asked. Preston nodded and reached out. He paused for a moment before flipping it over. He looked at her expectantly. She remained silent, laughing.
"You have to say 'is this your card'," she said with a teasing smile.
"Is this your card?" He asked his face red.
"Yes!" She said with a look of over dramatic surprise. He laughed nervously, feeling relieved that it had worked.
"I, um, I have to go," Preston said but he wasn't sure why. He didn't really have to go and he really didn't want to, but he felt like he was about to explode and his face was probably bright red. His face was burning.
For once her smile faded a moment, but it quickly returned, "okay, see you around then, Ace."
Preston nodded, "Bye Lucie."
He hurried out the door of the library and went home down the street, avoiding some people from school along the way.
