The beam lurched forward, a hissing sound following it. When it reached its target, for only mere seconds it sounded like a bag being zipped up and then it exploded with such force, a wave of pure heated air slammed back, knocking all breath out your lungs and throwing you back against the shelves. A gasp escaped you as you felt your entire back burn in pain.

"Y/N!", you heard Dabi's voice. Despite the pain you tried to gather yourself, it wasn't over yet. You fell forward, trying to stay out of the line of fire that was soon to come. There were a few seconds of silence before you heard yelling from outside. You could tell some of the men had not been knocked unconscious - or dead. "FIRE!", the voice roared. Shots came spewing once more, but not as many as before. The inaccuracy of the shots gave you the benefit of knowing that the blast had unsettled them and that at least a few of their soldiers were down.

Tiffany who had reached the gun, had been firing back but you could tell she was shaken up - most likely by you - her shots weren't very accurate. You were on your knees, coughing up blood and desperately trying to get some air. "Y/N", it was Dabi. He grabbed your shoulders, pushing you to the floor as he lay down beside you. You turned your head to look at him, breathing heavily. You could feel the blood drip from your mouth. You had to look absolutely horrendous.

You sent him a weak smile. "You have to admit, that looked pretty cool", you croaked jokingly. He stared at you. His mouth was parted lightly as he held your eyes.

He stared at Y/N. She looked awful, almost corpse-like. As he stared at her, he realized something. Something ... something he had known for a while now actually. Every heartbeat was audible in his ears. Scream, cry, smile, blink, run, laugh, kick, drink - anything but fall. It was inevitable, he realized, an action outside of his control. Maybe he'd been the one to bring it upon himself, but stopping it was not his decision. The consequences were all that lay within his future, the only option remaining as to face them. The gun shots had stopped. Silence was a worse impact than he had once imagined, awareness of his idiocy catching up to him. How had he let himself slip? As he stared at Y/N's eyes, he looked over the edge of the future; and he fell.

Dabi hadn't said anything, he only stared. You sighed, getting up. Whatever he was thinking was not important right now. The shooting had stopped, the footsteps coming closer. "Okay, listen", you mumbled to him, making sure Tiffany could hear it too, "we need to get out of here and quick. I have a plan, but you guys need to trust me". You coughed, it pained you to speak, to think, to even stay conscious at this point. "I'm going to make it really dark", you continued, unsure if that was even possible, but something within you said it just had to be, "either we grab hands and I lead you out or if you can, you need to run out yourself".

Tiffany nodded, hesitation in her eyes, but she knew she had no other choice. "I think I can go out by myself, I know the place pretty well, and I see a quick exit right there", she motioned towards one of the windows which was broken open with little to no debris in its path. You nodded. "Okay, that's good", you looked around, "we'll take that one". You motioned towards a path close to the one Tiffany had chosen. "But there's a lot of things in the way", she pointed out. You nodded, swallowing.

"Yeah, we're two people. We'll be slower so we need some things to hide behind", when she sent you a worried look, you explained further, "I have night vision. I'll be able to see just fine". She nodded once more. "Get ready", you mumbled slowly, the armed men stepped into the store coming closer. You tried to focus all the energy into yourself, trying to suck it up like juice out of a straw. You gasped; the power almost overwhelming as the world slowly descended into complete darkness as you took away the light the moon offered. A silence had fallen over everyone, the lamps popping outside the only noise. It was painful. It felt like a thousand needles within you that churned constantly, tearing you up from the inside. It was hard to focus, the pain becoming so bad all you could feel was a cold, numbness. The whole world around you was engulfed in complete and utter darkness now.

You redirected some of the energy into your eyes, activating your night vision. Your eyes burned with all the energy that flowed through them. It was so strong that your night vision even managed to look through some of the thinner objects. You reached out your hand to Dabi. The other men were yelling around panic-stricken at the sudden darkness, their red lasers flashing around. Dabi grabbed your hand yet hissed nearly jerking away.

You stared at him in confusion. You doubted he could see anything besides your eyes, but he would've imagined your confused look. "You're ... really hot", he croaked, trying to smirk, but it was visible he was in pain. Despite nausea already overcoming you, you tried to focus the energy more inward away from your hand that was holding Dabi. You winced; your heart felt like it was going to explode. "Go!", you croaked. It was barely audible, just above a whisper, but Tiffany heard it, getting up and blindly stumbling out.

You got up; your legs barely able to hold you upright. Your head pounded deeply as you tried to maintain the darkness. "I hear someone!", one of the men called out. They sensed you running passed. "Dabi!", you croaked. Luckily, he understood, and only seconds later did blue flames burst out, burning the man. You breathed a sigh of relief internally. At least Dabi seemed to be returning slowly to his normal self.

Shots were wildly fired around. You quickly pulled yourself and Dabi down behind a fallen over vending machine. You crouched down, holding onto Dabi's hand tightly. You could feel the blood begin to trickle down your cheeks as you looked over at him. It was clear he couldn't see anything as he squinted into the darkness. You forced yourself to focus once more as you looked around. The shooting had stopped again.

You jumped up, dragging Dabi behind you. You reached the window. "Jump!", you commanded Dabi hoarsely. He stepped over the frame. Relief flooded you as you stepped outside, running to Tiffany who was standing back against another building across the street. You sighed, unable to hold the energy any longer, the light from the moon slowly illuminating the place again. "Y/N!", Tiffany called out, her face paled in horror at the sight of you.

You felt yourself completely crash, despite trying your best to remain upright. Dabi's arm wrapped around your waist, keeping you up right. The armed men seemed to have noticed your presence outside, yelling and running to get out of the store. You were barely holding onto consciousness as you tried to formulate a plan for the next step of your escape. To your relief your beloved truck suddenly squealed around a corner, coming to an abrupt stop a few meters away from you.

To your surprise Jason sat in the driver's seat, aggressively motioning for you to come. "Let's go", Dabi's voice was calm and firm next to your ear. Tiffany ran towards the truck. "Yeah", you mumbled, trying to take a step, yet your legs gave out underneath you. You nearly crumbled to the ground had it not been for Dabi holding you up.

He shook his head, apparently coming to a resolution. He swept his arms underneath your legs, knocking you off your feet, carrying you bridal style. The abrupt movement nearly made you heave.

"What are you doing?", you complained, "I can walk by myself!". He rolled his eyes. "Shut up, dumbass". He started walking, pressing you against his chest. You glared at him - or tried to at least - it was hard when the world was spinning, and your vision clouded slightly red with blood. "Listen, if you dare call me a dumbass one more time after I just saved your petty ass; I will kick your ass so hard your vertebrae will pop out of your mouth one by one like a pez dispenser", you growled as he continued walking.

A grin rose to his lips. The first genuine grin you had ever seen him wear.
