“This is a huge commitment, Kip. I didn’t expect you to easily win, and I certainly didn’t expect you to want to move to Vanolufia!” Their mother shouted.

“Loanda, listen to me. I am going! I will follow my dreams!”

Their mother sighed. “It’s not that easy, Kip. What are we supposed to do? We have to follow you!”

“So come with me! Kristen doesn’t like her school, the boys cannot afford to continue their educations, you can barely grow crops in the desert, its scorching hot, who wants to live here? Come with me!” Kip pleaded.

“We’ll talk later.” Their mother grunted and slouched in her chair.

The rest of the ride, the family rode in silence. Kristen immediately felt the heat of her desert, and felt strong and happy again. It felt amazing to be able to think straight.

“Here you go, Kristen. Have a nice day at school and pay attention.” Her mother told her.

It was past noon. The kids in her class had just came from recess, and were all staring at Kristen as soon as she entered her classroom.

“Hey, look at her arm! Bandaged like a little baby! Again!” The students laughed loudly at Adonis’ remark as Kristen covered her arm up as much as possible and sat down in her desk.

Ebony, their instructor, turned to Kristen. “Adonis is truly sorry and would love to be your partner in history today. Isn’t that right, Adonis?”

Adonis grunted in return. Kristen slumped in her chair for the thousandth time that month. This was going to be a long day.

“Alright. Please complete the worksheet I am passing out. If you don’t finish, its homework. You all may work in groups of your choice, except for Adonis and Kristen, who have been assigned to work together. Let’s get started!” Ebony clapped her hands and sat down in her desk to grade papers.

“You know that I don’t want to work with you. You don’t want to work with me. Here is what I propose. You do the worksheet, give me the answers. I’ll copy them down my self. I don’t want Kristen germs on my paper. I talk with my friends about important stuff going on. I can do the friends job, because I have friends. You can to the work job, because you’re a nerd. Simple.” Adonis turned to her group of friends just two feet away. Kristen sighed and got to work.

Simple. Done. “Adonis, I’m done.” Kristen shouted across the classroom.

“About time, nerd. Gimme those papers.” Adonis copied the answers down messily and shoved  the paper back into Kristen’s hands. Seconds later, the bell rang. Time to leave the building.

Kristen walked down the gravel road and had an apple as she walked to her home. But something was different. Strange men were going in and out of her house with boxes. Tired and unable to deal with drama, she stuck a note on her door explaining that she would be at Aaron’s.

Kristen knocked on the door of the wooden house.

“Hey, Kris! Good to see you! Come on in!” Aaron motioned towards his small bedroom. The two sat on his bed, and Kristen lay her bag by the door.

“Need help studying? I didn’t think we had any tests. Oh, I see you got hurt again. Let me guess where and who was responsible for it. You’re left wrist...and...Adonis did it!” Aaron grinned.

“Stop, Aaron. This is serious. I think I’m moving away.”

Aaron’s grin turned to a frown. “Where?”

“Another village. It’s called Vanolufia. Kip got a job as a healer there.”

“Wow, that’s huge. Also, isn’t that village packed with snow right now? Girl, how will you deal?” Aaron asked.

“I dunno. You have to visit. I don’t care that its a four hour walk in all directions and a half hour minecart drive.”

“I know. But listen, Kristen. Is there any way I could come too? This heat isn’t good for my health. It’s never been. I’m sick once a week, and you’d think I’d outgrow the heat. It isn’t safe for me here. Plus, my family is all over the place. My parents are traveling, the siblings are all in college in other villages, I’m home alone with just a nanny.” He made a puppy dog face. Because their village was poor, they lived in the desert and had little education oppurtunities. Not a single villager had a diamond or over 20 experience. Not even the elders in their village.

Kristen sighed. “I could ask. But seriously. I’m scared. The cold was really bad for me this morning. We were there.” Kristen shivered just thinking about the snow.

“It’ll be alright. Now go check on what’s happening at home. I have homework to do.” Aaron chuckled.

“Okay.”
