“When Kristen reached her home, she could hear shouts from the inside.

“Mom! What the heck!?” Hendrix shouted.

“Don’t ‘what the heck’ me! I go where your grandmother goes, and in this case, that’s Vanolufia!” Kristen heard her mother scream. As Kristen got closer inside the house, she saw boxes everywhere. Hendrix was stomping up to his room. Dedrai and Lesmont, her other two brothers, stood in the middle of the room to protest.

“Pack your things right now! We are catching a train tonight!”

Dedrai took a step forward. “No way, mom. This is happening too fast. What am I going to tell my friends when I just vanish into thin air? I gotta tell them!”

“You could’ve told them all of this afternoon! Instead you stood around protesting when you know I’m not changing my mind!” Their mother glanced towards the door and noticed Kristen.

“Hello, sweetie. As you could probably tell, we are going to stay at a new house in Vandolufia. It’ll be okay. You’ll have a big house, tons of new friends, what else could a girl want?” Her mother’s eyes pleaded to agree.

“Okay. I didn’t like the desert much anyways.” She agreed. Kristen knew she would’ve picked a fight, but her mom’s tired facial expressions and her brothers fighting forced her to make it as easy as possible for her mother.

Dedrai and Lesmont scurried up into their rooms to pack. They were done fighting.

“Let’s get your things packed. I know, I know, such short notice. Very overwhelming, but Kip wanted to leave tonight. She says her position starts tomorrow. Normally, I would give you months to prepare for something like this.” Kristen nodded as her mom packed the second box of her clothing. She worked on her personal items and books. Because the family was poor, they didn’t have much to pack. However, this new occupation given to Kip would open up more opportunities for the family.

The family packed all of the boxes. Two huge trucks carried the whole family’s belongings as they took a minecart to their new home.

“Mom! I almost forgot! Can Aaron live with us here?” Kristen’s mother looked at her like she was crazy.

“Absolutely not! He does have some family with him! Nope! Not going to happen. But, he is welcome to visit whenever he wants.” Kristen hung her head in disappointment. However, she knew what the answer would be in the first place. When the family finally reached their new house, excitement filled the air.

“It’s so big!”

“WOW!”

“This is amazing!”

“Much better than the desert.”

The whole family burst into the new house and explored every corner before bedtime. Kristen even unpacked most of her boxes. There were many empty spaces in her room because she didn’t need much to fill the small room in her old desert home. Before she knew it, Kristen was being tucked into bed.

“Goodnight, sweetie. Thank you for handling this situation better than your brothers. Once again, you have proved yourself more mature than them.” Her mother giggled at the last statement. “Have nice dreams. We’ll try and get you signed up for a good, complicated school that’s on your levels.” Her mother kissed her cheek and left the room.

This was very different from the desert.
