“Violet?” I hear Jasper ask.
I chose to stop responding, maybe my death will come quicker.
“I know you can hear me. Look, you made a mistake,” He looks at the corpse and then his gaze meets mine. “But you can hunt animals instead of humans. You don’t have to let your thirst control you. I can help you.”
“Jasper, you found her!” I hear Alice’s soprano voice ring.
“Alice, get the corpse out of here, make it look like there was an accident.”
“Jasper...” Her tone changes causing me to look up. I see her giving Jasper a look with some serious meaning behind it.
Jasper looks at me and sighs, “I’ll talk to her about it.”
“I’ll see you later!” Alice and the body are gone in a flash.
“I’ll assume that you’ve figure that you can’t kill yourself that easily.”
I look up at him wanting to cry, but I can’t form tears, “Why?”
“I told you.”
“Fine,” I sigh in resignation. “What is the whole vampire ordeal that you were mentioning?”
“I’ll tell you, once you’ve returned to the house,” - I cringe at the thought of me draining the life out of Charlie - “Our house.”
“Why?”
“You are a new vampire, not only are your emotions heightened, but your senses as well. It is easier out here to give in to your thirst.”
“And you will explain everything?” I ask, biting my lip debating whether I should agree or not.
“Everything, that I have an answer for.”
He helps me up and we walk to the Cullen home - it is as if by some silent communication. Maybe I am just easy to read. It took five minutes of walking, of course, we were faster than average people - I was mostly surprised that I wasn’t exhausted. We must have walked a mile! We get into the house and I take a seat on the couch. Jasper takes a seat across from me, “Where do you want to start?”
“Why am I a vampire?”
“As I tried to explain before. The Volturi kidnapped you and injected you with a little venom. Usually transformations take three days, but since there was so little venom it took awhile to spread - nearly three months. I was worried, you had just gotten to the worse part of the transformation and I didn’t want to see you suffer for who knows how long, I had no other choice, but to give you more venom. It worked, you were... awake within ten minutes.”
“Why did the Volturi want me... I remember them saying something about me being Bella’s sister,” I question.
“I’m not that sure. Violet, you need to understand the Volturi are powerful. We consider them the ‘rulers of vampires and they enforce the law. We can not expose our secret to humans or create immortal children - that is why our family didn’t tell you-”
“They know her. Does Bella know?”
“Yes, but she is Edward’s blood singer - which means her blood calls out to him, in ways normal blood doesn’t. It takes awhile to be restrained enough to notice, even I sometimes have trouble with it. We have made plans to turn Bella, after we were confronted by the Volturi last year.”
“Why can’t I die easily?”
“That has to do with the essence of what we are. As vampires we are natural predators. Therefore, being on the top of the ‘food chain’ it is nearly impossible to kill us. No stakes or sunlight. We are designed to lure humans so we can attack. Some may say we have unnatural beauty or grace. Our eyes are a warning. My family’s golden eyes show we only feed from animals, but vampires with red eyes feed from humans. Newborns have red irises because the blood from being human is still fresh in them. It wears off within a few months-”
“I HAVE RED EYES!”
Jasper is at my side in a second and I feel instantly calm, “Relax, it goes away with time. As I was explaining, we even sparkle in the sunlight to attract humans which is why we don’t go out in the sunlight because it would expose our secret. Our venom is used to put our prey in so much pain that they can not escape, but if there is still blood in the body and venom is left to spread the person can become a vampire. Having no human needs to sleep or eat or even get sick also makes it difficult for a vampire to die. That is why, if you were torn apart limb by limb and the pieces are thrown in a fire you can die. If you are not burned your body can be reassembled by venom.”
“How can you do that?”
“What?” He asks as if he is oblivious.
“Make me feel calm.”
“Carlisle likes to call me an empath. I can feel everyone’s emotions in the room, but also manipulate them. I like a calm atmosphere so I usually try to keep it as such. I am sensitive to your emotions, I suppose, because you are a newborn and everything is heightened for you. Some vampires have traits that are magnified as vampires that we call powers. Alice has premonitions and Edward can read minds. You have a power as well-”
“What?”
“Your ‘flashbacks’ they are a gift, you can see people’s past on command.”
“But I don’t know how to control it.”
“That will come with time,” He explains.
“Thanks, for answering my questions,” I sigh standing up.
“Where are you going?”
“I have red eyes, I want to see them,” I climb up the stairs to find the bathroom. I hear Jasper trailing behind me. I wonder if he is waiting for me to have an emotional breakdown.
I step in front of the mirror and freeze. My skin is only slightly paler, and my complexion is flawless. My hair is slightly dirty from my adventure in the forest, but I look almost unreal, like a doll. My once violet irises are now crimson... like an evil possessed doll.
I turn back slowly to Jasper to catch him watching me intently, “What am I going to do?”
“What do you mean?” He asks.
“I can’t live with Charlie and Bella looking like this! Especially now that I will probably kill them. Where am I going to-”
“You can stay here, I know Esme and Carlisle won’t mind.”
“But-”
“Esme is shopping - she will be back soon and you can ask her yourself.”
